A well written and informative read. This book is very helpful for anyone that preaches or speaks for their livelihood. I learned a lot.

This is more of a book about public speaking than preaching, but most of the principles taught are applicable to either form of speech. You will also be helped if you find it difficult to make ordinary conversation on any given day.

Just what I was looking for. The author gives tips to those of us who need to perfect our social skills. It's a readable length and written in approachable language. Doesn't talk down to the reader. Does what it says and I found it helpful.

If only everyone in America would read this book! I read it and then try find myself rereading parts of it again and again

Military history, American or otherwise, isn't exactly my favorite but I nevertheless enjoyed this particular book greatly. As the title indicates, it's about the Moro War in the Philippines, a country in which I have a keen interest. The time span covered is about 11 years, and the author did a remarkable job weaving the various threads together in a gripping narrative, occasionally pausing to give background on important people. Overall, I felt like I learned a lot about Islamic society in the Philippines as well as American battlefield tactics, among other things. This particular part of history isn't talked about much, but there are some things that could be applied to our current situation in the Middle East, which the author also points out. Highly recommended for people who like military and/or Philippines history.

The most detailed accounts of Military action in the defeat and pacification of the Moro's . Arnold masters his subject and writes with energy the history of the Moro war . Once the American forces secured the main Philippine island against the Spanish speaking resistance then they turned their effort on the securing control of the Moro people . Having until that time being allowed to continue with slavery , piracy and the old ways of independent chieftains who oppressed , robed , murdered and enslaved the general Moro population . Arnold gives a blow by blow , warts and all account of the American action to subdue , secure and make the people safe under a honest code of laws . He does not hide the brutality of the combat of a professional army against brave poorly armed but often deadly Moro force . Like as with the American Indian wars ( which many of the top military leaders were ) . With out the help of Moro's them selves the peace never would have been secured . The history of the Moro scouts is rarely written of but Arnold shows the vital job they did to end the fighting as a war . From then on it was crimes that were investigated and made right .

I liked very much the way that the author demonstrated the relevance of this 14 year long conflict to today's situation with Muslim insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. There were similarities and differences - which were thoughtfully explained with good documentation.I was pleased that he gave good overviews of the Philippine activities of Captain, then General Pershing and other senior officers like Harbord and Bliss, but was disappointed that he only showcased Leonard Wood as one who used a more firm approach in dealing with the Moros, ignoring Col Alexander Rogers of the 6th Cavalry who's term as Military Governor of Sulu Island is possibly the underlying source of the mythology regarding Pershing "ordering X-number of Moros to be shot with bullets dipped in pig blood and burying them with pig entrails, etc" - - which, of course, was NOT something that Pershing would have done. I'd like to have seen that myth more firmly put to rest, though the Pershing's more enlightened handling of the Moros was well established. It's a good read on a little-known era of American Military history. Like the Mexican War did for many officers who were to rise to prominence in the War Between the States, the Moro Juramentado Insurrections in the Philippines became quite important in forming the careers of young officers who would later make their marks on the World Wars.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks to understand the important history of these wars of Pacification. Today we are still waging this kind of war with a wide variety of failed theories as to how we can force others to be like us. The exact same mayhem is going on today as it was over a hundred years ago and in many ways the world is far worse off. Same story no matter where we go. The Author has done a fine job of laying out this near impossible attempt at changing others. I recommend this be made mandatory reading for all elected officials.

As a history buff, I found this book very interesting and consider it a must read, especially if you are into military history. There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between these conflicts over a century ago and today's current events. The author did a great job detailing the backstory behind the main figures involved, and even included maps of the conflicts and old photographs. This is one I couldn't put down, and I actually read it cover-to-cover over a few days. (I can't even think of the last book where I did that.) I did purchase the Kindle edition, and while it's completely fine, the print version would probably be nicer if you want higher-detail photos and to be able to flip between the maps and chapters.

This in is an excellent book on the Moro War (1902-1913)in the southern Philippines. Unfortunately, the Filipino Army is still fighting Muslim extremists (including ISIS) in the exact same place around Lake Lanao in Mindanao today. They fought a 5 month long battle for the city of Marawi City in 2017.

This book is both well-researched and well-written. James Arnold avoids editorializing, presenting instead the evidence on this subject - from primary sources - thus allowing the reader to form their own opinion. This is the hallmark of a good historian. The subject matter is of particular interest to me, as my great-great uncle was in the United States Army at that time, stationed in the Philippines, and was in Company "B", 19th Infantry.

I recently took a course in cataloging and classification as part of a masters of library science degree program. This Crash Course manual from Moulaison and Wiechert was our primary text for the class. The book provides a thorough introduction to creating bibliographic records with the RDA content standard and conveying that information through the MARC encoding language, but it never gets so deep as to become overwhelming. It starts with general information about cataloging and defines the requisite terminology. It then goes into how RDA is related to the FRBR model (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), how the two work together to describe the fundamental characteristics of the FRBR group I entities (work, expression, manifestation, and item), and the corresponding MARC fields used to encode that information. The second half of the book discusses the basics of assigning subject headings using controlled vocabularies and determining call numbers for the Library of Congress Classification or Dewey Decimal Systems. An appendix includes sample MARC/RDA records that are helpful for reference.When you're actually cataloging, you'll be using mostly online tools like the RDA Toolkit, Cataloger's Desktop, Classification Web, the Library of Congress Authorities, or the MARC21 Standards, but you can't just dive in and hit the ground running in those resources without knowing what you're looking for. It's like if you try to learn Chinese writing, you probably have to study for at least a year before you can even figure out how to use a Chinese dictionary. This book lays the foundation upon which you can build further cataloging knowledge using more advanced resources. As much as possible for a metadata language, the text is written in plain English that is easy for the novice to understand, rendering an intimidating subject manageable. I had no prior experience cataloging, but by the end of the semester I felt confident in my ability to create bibliographic records in RDA and MARC.

Michael S. Gazzaniga is the director of the SAGE Center for the Study of the Mind at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the president of the Cognitive Neuroscience Institute, the founding director of the MacArthur Foundation’s Law and Neuroscience Project, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of many popular science books, including Tales from Both Sides of the Brain. He lives in California.

I just finished the bookIt IS remarkably clear - for such a complicated subject.It is also warm and engaging and frequently funny.I loved the first third about mankind's grappling with the concept of consciousness throughout history.I then hung on through the next third detailing the architecture of the brain - which would normally have scared me off, but is necessary to really grasp where the author is taking us. Tackling this part is made easier by Gazzaniga’s witty and fluid explanations. (Layers and modules and bubbles, oh my!)I then enjoyed the last third (while barely clinging by my fingertips to each fast-appearing new concept) wherein the reader winds up on the “sunny side of the Schnitt” (you have to read it!).It’s entertaining, enlightening, and accessible to even a stumbling layman like myself.It is also as upsetting of previous notions as a really fresh approach must be.And, in all, it is a pleasure to read!A tour de force!

Michael Gazzaniga boldly attempts to discuss the emergence of consciousness. The concept of consciousness is extremely difficult to approach as we all think we know what it is, but trying to define it is a challenge in an of itself! The author tries to reflect on his life as a cognitive neuroscientist with deep professional expertise in split-brain cases to describe to the reader how he believes consciousness works and how to think about it. It is ambitious and interesting but the subject remains one which can't just be communicated as clearly as the author intended in a format like this.The author breaks the book up into 3 parts. He starts out with the history of a theory of mind discussing Descartes, Hume and so forth with a focus on framing early thoughts of dualism as well as reductionist ideas to consciousness. The author spends a lot of time discussing the philosophy of mind and the book makes sense but the writing, though understandable is not as engaging as when the author is discussing his own work. The author then gets into the modular brain and how for robustness you need layered architecture without a dependence on one exact part. The author brings up the fact that people with damaged brains don't lose consciousness and so the idea that consciousness is located in a place has no empirical support. The author goes through things like Alzheimer's to highlight the challenges of trying to detach consciousness from our broad mental capacities. The third part of the book starts out a bit convoluted and the author gets into complementarity in quantum theory. The author discusses how there isn't an objective reality in the deterministic sense described by Newton and so pure determinism is on shaky ground. The author then describes the work of another professor on how cellular life lives on the boundary of coherence and decoherence. Its pretty out there and does not add coherently to the discussion unfortunately and I do have familiarity with the ideas the author is alluding to. The author then tries to use the idea of complementarity as a concept to say the physics of the brain is different from the information content of the biological material. The author then gets into how phenotype can be represented by various genotype and genes and minds are not one to one correspondences. All of these ideas make some sense but they don't really lead the author to where is main idea is which is that consciousness is the bubbling of projections of mental priorities of all the various modules in the brain. This is a very interesting an well argued idea which the author uses split brain patients to reinforce. In particular the author argues that people with injured brains still are conscious but aspects of their previous consciousness seem to be missing indicating that our mind states are projections of the available modular brain states in a sort of bubbling process. If we lose part of our mind, our consciousness remains but is absent the bubbling of the lost part and we are unaware that it is missing because our brain modules don't talk to each other. That is pretty remarkable and for the author's concluding insights alone the book is worth the read.The Consciousness Instinct gives an intuitive theory of consciousness that has empirical support, is not overly philosophical and overwhelmed by semantic issues. The book attempts to overview how a theory of consciousness has evolved over time such that when the author outlines his ideas it is at the end of the road. As a means to get to his arguments it is a bit dry to read and as mentioned with ideas like complementarity there is something to be desired. But for the author's own ideas at the end I definitely rate the book. So worth reading, but patience is needed at times.

Left me feeling empty. The convincing ideas were nothing new, and the new ideas were not very convincing. Would recommend sticking to his earlier books, which are much more engrossing and informative.

Professor Gazzaniga articulates with care and precision the history of thought on consciousness. This book is one of those RARE treatises that result in the reader not only knowing more, but being smarter for having done the reading. It fires neurons, in other words, that (in my case, anyway) need firing. HIGHLY, highly recommend this work by "the father of cognitive neuroscience." This is the real deal. -- Randall R. Scott

Michael S. Gazzaniga is an expert in the field of consciousness. I read the book because the publisher's marketing indicated it would explain startling new discoveries in consciousness research.Unfortunately, much of the book goes over familiar ground. In fact, the first two sections provide lengthy overviews of the history of philosophical ideas and scientific research concerning consciousness. It's not until you reach the final, much briefer section, that you get the good stuff--new advances in consciousness research. I was particularly interested in a detailed look at these new theories, along with a thoughtful discussion on the implications for science, animals, and humans.I was eager for a book that focused mostly on those subjects. I'm still looking for that book.

I aprreciatte all writings of Professor Gazzaniga

Spends a lot of time discussing the anatomy of the brain and what functions are based in which areas, but these do not really explain what is called the "big problem", how the brain creates an tillusion of consciousness. Nor does he discuss why consciousness is lost when blood pressure drops below a certain point (approximately 55/35). In the end, Mr. Gassanga argues that consciousness is a form (or expression) of instinct, but his claim is far from convincing. In my view, Nagel is still the best analyst on this topic. .

It’s comforting to think that Darwin’s marvelous finding applies to our consciousness. It’s just hard to understand how it can be so.

Incredible resource. It has EVERYTHING dental related in terms of oral diseases. Not only is it helpful for us visual learners, it describes the etiology and sometimes treatment options for the diseases. Definitely a book to have in your dental office.

My instructor wrote the book, so the review is probably biased. I'd say it's well organized, appropriately detailed for reference, and generally just easy to use. It's a good resource to have on hand whether for use or perusing during free time.

Good pictures and I love that it gives the photograph of the lesion and next to that is the radiographic image for comparison. Definitely useful!

Is it okay to be a Murray Spiegel fan? Alright maybe you don't know him, neither do I but after using several of his Schaum's outlines to get through undergraduate classes I find that he is a very knowledgeable teacher. His resources have always worked well for me.

I bought this book to study for a graduate school exam. I took a complex variables course, but needed to refresh and learn a few things beyond what was taught in my class. I couldn't have passed the exam without this book. It is not loaded down with jargon or abstract theory. It teaches you very practical techniques for solving different classes of problems. It has many fully worked out examples, which you can copy and work out on your own as you practice. If you're looking for practical help, this is definitely better than a textbook or anything you could find online.

I've had three Schaum's outlines so far (Advanced Mathematics.., Mechanical Vibrations, Complex Variables) and this one is just as useful as the others.It's a great resource if you are someone who needs to see examples of math problems to gain proficiency. I don't do well going from theory to application to execution without seeing a few examples, and that is exactly what this outline does. It also has many many such examples that are clearly explained without making the "leaps of abstraction" that can easily lose the less experienced students.If you are taking a course in Complex Variables, or are considering studying complex analysis this book is definitely worth the money.

I bought this to help me in a complex variables class in addition to the main text: Complex Variables: Second Edition (Dover Books on Mathematics).The Fischer is pretty terrible (see my review there), but this book is great. At the beginning of each section it quickly and expertly explains all the formulas, propositions, and theorems. It then lists all the important definitions. It follows this "overview" (which I've been using as my primary text) with hundreds of examples. The steps are clear in each one, and often the problems are worked in different ways to show you different approaches that you can take.This book has been invaluable and I'd highly recommend it to anyone taking a college level complex analysis course. It may be a bit basic for a graduate level student, but most of the graduate students in my class seem to really like it.

Contents are pretty good and useful. But why on earth is it printed on phone-book quality paper?! It's so thin it partly spoils the reading experience, one is constantly afraid the paper will tear when turning a page. I'll happily pay a few dollars extra to have it printed on decent quality paper.

This book did meet my expectations and I am pleased with it. It covers the full spectrum of complex variables; however, many of the problems are setup as proofs which I don't like as well.

I never took a course in complex variables so a professor recommended this book to me. The format is simple and straighforward. Every chapter begins with a terse exposition of the subject matter to be covered. Immediately following is a longer section of "solved problems," where the theory is put into use. The final section consists of problems for the student to solve. The techniques necessary to solve these problems are covered in the earlier "solved problems" section. It is apparently intended as a supplementary textbook, although to me the book seems perfectly adequate by itself for self teaching. No good if you like to learn through reading alone, but for the hands-on type it is very good.

I purchased this complex Variables Schuam's Guide in conjuction with my complex Variables class it is very good short - refernece guide to complex variables.I used it every now and then whenever their was a subject I didn't understand in class.I am giving it 4 stars because not all subjects covered in class were listed in the book so i used the class textbook (Complex Variables) to help me there or visiting the professor in his office hours.
