Synopsis:This novel, sexually explicit without being crude, is indeed the story of O, a woman whose love for a man leads her to increasingly submissive behavior - allowing herself to be sexually used, violently beaten, and physically mutilated, which releases her independence of thought, and eventually causes her to abandon her individual identity. Sir Stephen, O soon realizes, is to be her sole master - Rene, out of respect for him, cedes more and more sexual and physical control of O. For her part, O is at first determined to remain as emotionally faithful as she can to Rene. As time goes on, however, O becomes more and more deeply devoted to Sir Stephen, coming to think of the brutal way he treats her as a sign of her worthiness to be cared for. Eventually, Sir Stephen takes O to meet Anne-Marie, the woman who, O learns, will arrange for Sir Stephen to mark her with the ultimate sign of that worth: branding with a hot iron.Following her acceptance of Sir Stephen's brand, O returns to her life in Paris where she is told by Sir Stephen to do whatever it takes to bring Jacqueline under his control; the goal of which, he says, is to get Jacqueline to the chateau. At first, O refuses, having fallen in love with Jacqueline herself. Later, however, when she sees the merciless way Jacqueline treats Rene (who has fallen in love with her) and when she (O) also realizes that her devotion to Sir Stephen is now so complete that she will do anything in order to please him, O manipulates Jacqueline into at least considering a trip to the chateau. O also becomes involved with Jacqueline's half-sister Natalie, who seems much more eager than her sister to follow O's path. Just what that path involves is made clear to Natalie when O, following the directions of Sir Stephen, is put on as a nude, silent, sexually titillating display at a party. The action of the novel concludes here, but an epilogue reveals that upon returning to the chateau, O was abandoned by Sir Stephen. The epilogue also suggests that there is an alternate ending to this story - that upon learning that Sir Stephen was to leave her, she begged to be allowed to die rather than left alone. Sir Stephen, narration reveals, gave his permission.Opinion: The author gets a little tedious with over attention to detail so some pages pass slowly but the plot moves along quickly. Some readers may be repulsed by the subject material so please know before buying that this is the story of a "vanilla" being converted into a slave.

This is not the book I originally Read. Since the book was banned I think they changed a lot of things. The ending is not what I have .

Painful in so many ways. I read it after reading the first "50 Shades" book (a horribly written, redundant, watered down version of "Story of O") because I was curious to know if the subject matter could be presented in a more mature way. It certainly was in this book. I found myself cringing and ultimately horribly depressed by the character's decisions. Good writing elicits strong responses, and this one had me responding strongly.

The story ends abruptly. A note saying the ending was "suppressed" is printed at the bottom of the page. it also says there exists two endings. What a waste of time and money to read something, just to have to imagine the ending.

I have read this book many times over the years. I have a habit of lending it out and not getting it back so I decided to add it to my kindle library. Pauline Reage writes very well, the book is captivating and the dive into the mind of our lead character is fascinating. I wouldn't be surprised if the author has some psychology study in her history.Before Fifty Shades of Grey, The Secretary or The Piano Teacher, Pauline Reage, had the guts to write about a taboo subject from the perspective of love and the complete and utter surrender of one's complete self to the person they love. Not filthy, not smut, but a believable dive into the mind of master and slave, love and obedience (please know I mean this only from the main character's point of view) and the sacrifice of giving all or too much and losing yourself in the process. I always recommend this to anyone who shows the slightest bit of interest in pondering why people do what they do in relationships, whether it be psychological or physical abuse (pleasure), however you choose to view it. I'm not one to judge just a curious observer to the possibility that my ideas are no better or worse than those of anyone else so long as all participants are willing players in the game.Great read, every time for more than 20 years. Well-written, captivating, interesting, original and intriguing. I think I like it.

Thank God for "Story of O" loooooooong before "50 Shades" became the laughing stock of the BDSM community. O possesses all the beauty and heart of the ideal sub/bottom and transitions into her different relationships with a certain finesse. It's the book you end up loaning away again and again to spread the good word...and clear up the residual stupidity and Disney one-liners left over from "50 Shades".

So dark. So weird. So delicious. So, so French. This is erotica, not erotic romance. It's sinister and strange and shocking, exactly what I want erotica to be.

A classic D/s novel which I have read several times over the past forty years. Still as entertaining today as when I first read it.

Love her poems. Motherhood. Marriage. Very relatedable.

I have to strongly disagree with the previous reviewer. I found Ms. Garrison's poems to be uplifting, encouraging and as bright as the noonday sun.I came away from the book with a smile on my face and feeling optimistic about the state of Motherhood in America today. Nobody has perfect kids, we all know that, and yet....we all want to believe our kids *are* the perfect ones. I know my two daughters are as perfect as perfect can be...as are their children. Don't be scared away from this book by one negative review. The poems are refreshing and upbeat and are about one woman's unique, real life. She doesn't claim to be Edna St. Vincent Millay...she just wrote luminous little poems about her own life experience as only she could do. I'm glad I heard Ms. Garrison on NPR and found her poetry.

I loved Deborah Garrison's first book of poems, heard them read on NPR one day as I drove over the long miles between Charlotte and Charlottesville. I still remember sitting in the car and scribbling her name, the book's name, on a receipt. I bought the book immediately and treasured them for their melancholy, their understated humor. When I saw she'd written a book of poems about motherhood, well, I *knew* I would love it.I suppose I knew wrong. Maybe it's just me, that I have no perfect attitude towards my children, that my two boys are far from storybook quality. Think of them more as dramatic novel material, stunningly beautiful, full of tension, rife with passion, that runs the gamut from dark to silly. But Deborah's poetry about motherhood is treacle. Simple sugars that may taste good for a moment on the tongue but then clog your throat with their cloying sweetness.You see, Deborah's poetry has lost its melancholy. Her pieces about strangers ("I saw you walking") have that quiet introspective quality that I missed so. But her treatment of her children, of motherhood, is all roses and bliss. I find myself angry for being brought to tears by "A Drink in the Night", which isn't poetry, but a nicely-worded treatment of a cute story about her daughter, one that should go in the album to repeat at her wedding, one day, but not as literature. There is no wrong in these poems, not in "A Human Calculation" (full of self-sacrifice and adoration), not in "Both Square and Round." I love that Deborah loves her children so. But good poetry it's not.When she forgets that all she is about is wide-eyed motherly bliss, she's funny ("To the Man in the Loden Coat") or packs vast meaning into a single moment ("Pink and White"). Her poem about having a third child ("September Poem") is almost what I wish it would be. What she is arching for, I think, to be Sharon Olds.Sharon Olds she's certainly not. I won't read her birth poem at blessing ways. Her breastfeeding sonnet (much though I appreciate a good homage to breastfeeding) is too light, too full of sugar, "you grow so you / can go from me, I know, yet I drink in / the sweet increase that will divide us."I wanted so much more.

I am not a person who reads poems. I just never thought it was a good way to pass the time. I picked this up at the library and I swear it just popped into my hands! The way she writes is how I think, but can't express myself. She puts into words what my heart thinks. I love how she talks about nursing her children, about life/death, about being overcome with worry for her children, etc. I read it three times last night and was reading it to my husband in bed. I will buy this book for myself. It is terrific and I will get her other books from the library.

This book spoke to me. Perhaps because I too am a mother who lives in New Jersey and commutes to NYC on a daily basis, but I think anyone who has moved on to the next stage of their life, will enjoy Ms. Garrison's wry observations of modern life and parenthood. The poems are both moving and funny and she writes in an accessible, conversational tone.This book was a great treat. I am considering buying it for my other mommy-friends.

This is a book to read and keep. Wonderful words. I would really like to see more by this author.
