Excellent. All the Great Courses I've bought are thought provoking, well organized, and superbly presented. They contain so much information that you'll want to listen to them over and over (I'm on my 2nd time). I look forward to purchasing many more.
All went well with the ordering and shipping. I expected a study guild, but I obtained the study guild from a different website. Together with the CD and the study guild is the only way to understand and appreciate the material. I suggest to others interested in purchasing this type of study is to make sure a study guild is included.
Bought this set and would not even consider reselling them-they were awful-could not get past the first tape. Perhaps the others were better but i did not want to waste my time to find out. i had purchased the another set of cds from the teaching company on St. Augustine's Confessions and they were TERRIFIC and would highly recommend those. Prof cary sounds often as if he is an atheist or at the very least disdainful of what St. Augustine has to offer! If you want a GOOD set of CDs about St Augustine buythe set by Profs Cook and Herzman-they are a pleasureand it is obvious from their presentation they love their subject and want others to share in the richness St Augustine possesses for all of us.
good subject, interesting
Good introductory course for Augustine. I didn't know very much about Augustine so suitable course for a beginner. Professor presents material in a satisfactory manner.
I wanted a CD version, but received the tape version. That did not seem clearly marked in the purchasing area of Amazon. All purchases I made that day were CDs
Professor Cary has rarely disappointed this student. His skills as a teacher are crafted and convey a love for the topic like few other lecturers. This course is no exception. Through a quick flight over several major works of Augustine, Professor Cary gives us a glimpse into that great intellectual giant. Though not all will agree with every Augustinian theory Professor Cary conveys (I certainly do not), one cannot deny his depth of understanding and his ability to reason for his views. The minor disagreement with those views serves only as a stimulant to better understand the topic of Augustinian thought. Which leads me to the one criticism, this course is far too short. This is a study gaining great interest especially now with the rise of Cardinal Ratzinger, perhaps the most influential Augustinian philosopher of modern times, to the Papal office. So much could be done to share the insights of Dr. Ratzinger and others concerning the rich philosophical depths of Augustine. We hope that the Teaching Company will accept the challenge.
This series of 12 audio lectures is an excellent little overview of Augustine, his life, times, and philosophy. Most of the series focuses on his writings and philosophy as well as their evolution over time, often with discussion of the historical context in which they were created as well as some useful comparing/contrasting to extant philosophies of the day (particularly Platonism and Manicheism.)Early in the series there were some interesting and important re-definitions of some contemporary words. Cary pushes them back to an earlier time with slightly different meanings compared to their modern ones which certainly helps to frame the overarching philosophy presented. Without a close study of this vocabulary, many modern readers will become lost or certainly misdirected when reading modern translations. As examples, words like perverse, righteousness, and justice (or more specifically their Latin counterparts) have subtly different meanings in the late Roman empire than they do today, even in modern day religious settings. My favorite part, however, has to have been the examples discussing mathematics as an extended metaphor for God and divinity to help to clarify some of Augustine’s thought. These were not only very useful, but very entertaining to me.Some may shy away from Augustine because of the religious overtones which go along with his work, but though there were occasional “preachy sounding†sections in the material, they were present only to clarify the philosophy.I’d certainly recommend this series of lectures to anyone not closely familiar with Augustine’s work as it has had a profound and continuing affect on Western philosophy, thought, and politics. The series is generally straightforward, elucidating, and clear -- particularly for a topic that can become quite dense and obtuse -- and done at an introductory level for either a high school or introductory college work.
