This is hands down the best overview of what it takes to truly retire that I've ever read. (And as a bona-fide personal finance junkie, CFA, and 15 year veteran of the financial services industry - I've read a lot of books on the subject). In less than 100 pages & in jargon free English, this gem of a book nails the key issues of: (1) How do you identify your "number" - that amount you must have saved to be able to safely nibble away on your nest egg in retirement with low odds of outliving your money AND (2) exactly how to draw down that nest egg - from asset allocation to what Michael smartly calls 'asset location' (what investments to put in which accounts & in what order to access funds from those accounts). If you are trying to get a handle on whether or not you can retire, this book is an absolute must read. Five stars!!

I heard about Mike Piper and his books on The Bogleheads online forum. I decided to buy this book and check him out.The author boils down retirement planning to about 100 pages compared to the 370 pages in The Bogleheads Guide to Retirement Planning and Jim Otar's 525 pages in Unveiling the Retirement Myth.By the title, I assumed all 100 pages would focus on the decision on whether or not to retire. Instead, 30 pages focus on this key decision...and the balance of 70 pages focus on the steps to take after you decided to retire. This is ok, but not what I expected from the title.My reading time was about 50 minutes, but I took notes as I went to be able to write this book review. If you subtract the note taking time, my reading time was about 40 minutes.Piper mentions that state guarantee associations exist to back up an insurance company that fails. The soundness of an insurance company is critical if they are paying you a lifetime SPIA. It is extremely difficult to find data about past insurance company failures and whether investors lost money or not on their SPIA's. As we all remember in the Sub-Prime Crash of 2008, AIG basically went bankrupt and Uncle Sam had to bail them out. William Bernstein has correctly pointed out that buying SPIA's may be too risky because of the chance of insurance company failures and inability of state guaranty associations to fill the gap.Piper correctly raises the major issue of conflict-of-interest if you choose to use a financial planner. His example of conflict-of-interest is financial planners not recommending SPIA's because it reduces the amount of assets under the AUM (assets under management) financial model........and therefore reduces the annual income to the financial planner. This can be remedied by negotiating an annual retainer fee which does not depend on the vagaries of a fluctuating stock market or SPIA usage. In the spirit of full-disclosure, I am co-author of Chapter 18...Seeking the Help of Professionals..... in The Bogleheads Guide to Retirement Planning.......and I think our chapter elaborates and does a much better job of explaining the conflict-of-interest issue.One thing I was not aware of until a couple of months ago, is that if you retire between age 55 and age 59.5, you might be better off leaving your money in your 401K versus rolling it over to an IRA. Tax law allows you to withdraw from the 401K without the 10% penalty if you are in this situation. Piper does mention this fact.One thing Piper mentions that I was not aware of.......was that if you own company stock in your 401K plan...you can withdraw it and pay long term capital gains taxes versus higher ordinary income tax rates. I have not heard of this loophole before. Of course, I would recommend being fully diversified and not investing much in your own company stock.......just ask Enron employees what can happen.Piper correctly points out that if you a financial advisor who uses the 1% AUM model (he charges you 1% of assets under management each year) your 4% safe withdrawal rate really becomes 3% because of the 1% AUM fee. Many advisors charge a fraction of 1% AUM, which means your SWR is higher than 3%.Piper repeats the basic financial guide to put dividend paying investments into retirement accounts (bonds, bond funds, TIPS, and REIT's) and stocks in taxable accounts.He also points out your available options if your investment income is not high enough to support you in retirement: Work longer, work part-time in retirement, reduce retirement living expenses, reduce current expenses and save more, annuitize using SPIA's which generate more than 4% (but leave nothing for your heirs), or try to get higher returns from your retirement portfolio.Given the low savings rate and portfolio size of most Baby Boomers, I suspect many of them will tap their equity in their home and use it for retirement living expenses via reverse mortgages. Piper does not mention reverse mortgages as an option.All-in-all, a good little book with practical advice. In our U.S. culture of short attention spans (e.g. 8 sec TV commercials).....maybe more people can learn the very basics of retirement planning versus having to read full length books.

This book did a nice job of covering a broad range of financial considerations before retiring. However, most times when the author started to dive into details, he referred the reader to one of his other book offerings. If instead he had presented some of these details within this book it would have been a five.

This is a great read for someone new to the retirement game. I'm in my mid-20s and have decided to get a head start on retirement planning, and this book's chock full of good information.My honest opinion: not nearly enough young people take the time to really learn about this asset of theirs: many just blindly throw money in to an retirement account at their place of business - or worse - some people don't start thinking about until it's two late, and most of these people are forced to work until the day they die.This book taught me a lot of basic things I needed to know, and it inspired me to manage my money today and put as much money in to my retirement account as I can. My full contribution, employer's match included, is now 20%. And I may raise that number in the future if I find a surplus in my budgeting.Understand, "100 pages or less" won't tell you absolutely everything. But it makes an excellent primer or introduction to the world of retirement planning.

I have always been a huge fan of the Blackadder series. Now, even if I do have a fair grasp of English, it is not my native language and some of its finesse can sometimes escape me, especially when it is delivered at a fast pace like in the Blackadder serie.So I wanted to be able to get a bit more in depths in my understanding of it so I was delighted when I discovered that the book existed that listed every single word uttered over the whole 4 seasons and some more...I would not advise it to anyone not familiar with the serie, as the delivery of the cast is about 2/3rd of the humor. Yes the writing is wonderful, the plots as well but being able to read it while picturing the cast in full show is much more delightful.So just to say: Blackadder is maybe the funniest sitcom of all times, followed closely by Fawlty towers. Having the transcripts is for the true fans and it is simply the cherry on top.

It's the scripts as filmed. Plus a few other tid-bits. A few pages of The BlackAdder Chronicles; a not-quite-as-funny outline of some of the missing bits between the series. i.e. a paragraph on Queen Anne's obsession with table legs. A paragraph on Cardinal Blackadder & Henry 8th eating lightly oiled lampreys... that sort of stuff. Also graphically spread with period wood-cuts of turnips, sheep, archers, etc. plus publicity photos.All-in-all a nice collection of the writing from the series & specials. Especially useful when you can't understand the Scots accents or miss a line due to the badly done British sound recording. (I'll never understand the BBC et. al. inability to record human speech. One can only guess they bought the off-brand recording tape and borrowed microphones from the neighbor's kid. Either that or there's a serious compatibility issues between the US & UK recording systems.) Buy it, so you to can mouth the words along with the greats.

"Blackadder" is one of the most brilliant television shows ever. The star, Rowan Atkinson, along with other series regulars such as Tony Robinson (as the perpetual dogsbody with a cunning plan,) Tim McInnerny, Stephen Fry, and Hugh Laurie carry this show through four distinct historical periods, with more laughs than could possibly be expected. Series one starts in the fifteenth century, with Atkinson as Prince Edmund, the illegitimate and despised son of the lunatic king, Richard IV. During this season Edmund adopted the moniker "The Black Adder" only after Baldrick advised him it was much more awe inspiring than his original choice "The Black Vegetable." (Note that while his name is spelled "Blackadder" in the scripts, when it is used as a title in season one, it is spelled "Black Adder.") This season sets the stage for Blackadder as a conniving and scheming con man, a reputation he and his Blackadder descendants live up to through the rest of the series.Seasons two and three see a progression though history with Edmund first becoming Lord Edmund Blackadder, in the court of Elizabeth I (who is delightfully played by Miranda Richardson,) and later becoming the butler to Prince George, the Prince Regent, who is the idiot offspring of crazy King George III. These seasons provide the most laughs of the series for me, and I am particularly enthralled with the episode "Ink and Incapability" in which Baldrick burns Doctor Johnson's new dictionary. This episode is the ultimate in Blackadder humor, witty and urbane, yet full of madcap comedic moments as well, especially when Blackadder introduces new and confounding words for Dr. Johnson's considerations: "Contrafibularities, sir. It is a common word down our way....I am anaspeptic, phrasmotic, even compunctious to have caused you such pericombubulations." (Of course in true Blackadder fashion this only gets him in trouble, as Coleridge, the poet and Johnson ally threatens to thrust an Oriental disemboweling cutlass up his "ignoble behind.")The forth season of Blackadder sees Atkinson as Captain Edmund Blackadder in the British army during the trench warfare of World War One France. This series also had a lot of laughs, with my favorite episode being "Private Plane," in which Blackadder and Baldrick join the Royal Air Force and are forced down behind enemy lines. They are subsequently interrogated and insulted by the Red Baron ("How lucky you English are to find the toilet so amusing, for us it is a mundane and functional item, for you it is the basis of an entire culture.") and sentenced to teach home economics to a convent of nuns for the duration of the war. One thing about this season (and two of the others) is that in the last episode of the season the entire cast dies, which elevates the series into a peculiar blend of black comedy and social commentary which I have still not grown fully accustomed to.The book is a collection of scripts and has several extras germane to the time period being satirized which are also well done. I like the excerpt from "Dr. Johnson's Dictionary" provided on page 106, with definitions such as "left behind - part of the sitting apparatus of a personage," and "leek - a long, thin Welsh tomato." There are also helpful lists of the "Duties of the Prince Regent," "Duties of a Butler of a Royal Household" which includes "Commissioning moleskins (as and when necessary)," and "Duties of an Underscrogman." Baldrick, being the Underscrogman serving under Edmund is responsible for (among other things): "Removing and making good all squoles, whiffen-plugs, and blunters," "Cleaning the wulger-hole," "Quilping," "Cliving," "Groving," "Arranging the sheep droppings into neat little pyramids," "Frossiking the hounds," "Folding the glut-pile," and of course, "Making sandwiches."This is a wonderful book, though if you are unfamiliar with the series, I recommend buying the DVD set and watching the shows first; a subsequent reading of this book will ensure many more laughs. As a side note, profits from this book go to the charity Comic Relief, a brief history of which appears in the last three pages of the book.I recommend this book very highly for intelligent wit, and I likewise recommend the television series on DVD interphrastically.

I had to stop reading this book before falling asleep...I nearly choked laughing and woke up the house. Having seen ALL the BlackAdder shows, I have the added fun of being able to recreate these scenes in my mind. This kind of humor depends on great characters (done), absurd situations (done), and clever turns of phrase (done). I'm so glad I found this book and you will be too.

Humorous dialogue that is almost impossible to find in any other media. Love the show and love the extras of this book.

Bottom line: As a Christian counselor and leadership coach for more than three decades, I am excited to see this resource (Redeemed Sexuality) become available! I completely agree with the initial reviews included with the book (or see the IV Press website). This is not hype. I highly recommend this book!It is a curriculum or guidebook for a peer-led small group experience to promote growth and healing for young adults in the area of sexual brokenness and meaningful relationships. The content is vital, comprehensive, well written, and biblically faithful. It challenges the reader to aim high yet wonderfully manages to be realistic, grace-filled and encouraging. Group participants are guided to pursue their unique personal journey toward Christ-centered sexual wholeness in light of God’s original design for interpersonal connection and intimacy. Boa understands that long-term success requires that participants actively engage in the material and process. He rightly advocates that the group format is key to that engagement and the hope of ongoing transformation. As I’ve noted, Redeemed Sexuality groups are facilitated by a peer-leader. Ample and wise guidance is provided in the book for that leader, guidance that is sure to help the other participants as well.Clearly, Boa has done well to acquire knowledge and wisdom from many reputable and experienced sources. I confess that I have not read as widely as he has, but I’d be surprised to find another resource, Christian or not, that better brings the best of it all together in one place. Again, I highly recommend this book!

When I encouraged him to pitch it to IVP, they loved it. You will too. At long last, we can drop the guilt and shame, stop pretending, talk about sex a lot, and discover how to redeem our individual stories. In the end, that's what we all want, isn't it? Don't wait. I have been a fan of Ms McElroy & Ms Wilson since I first got my artsy little hands on Image Transfer Workshop: Mixed Media Techniques for Successful Transfers. I value that book tremendously and was more than a little stoked when I heard they had another compilation on the way. As much as I adore Image Transfer Workshop, this new book is equally fantastic (just on different subject matter)!I cannot agree with the other reviewer about the illustrations, though. At all. I LOVE the photos and work used as examples. I don't care if it came from class students or so-called "professionals" - I thoroughly enjoyed all of it and in my opinion, each piece pictured serves as inspirational reiteration of the projects/ideas/techniques presented. Beyond the Introduction and a short instructional on How to Use This Book, there are two major sections: Techniques and Inspirational Projects. The Technique section in broken into three sub-categories: Additives (Aluminum Foil, Drawing Grounds, Ventilation Tape, Faux Encaustics, just to name a few), Resists (Rubbing Alcohol, Petroleum Jelly, Salt, White Craft Glue, etc), and Subtractive or Combination (Painted Leaf, Rust, Sanding, Tyvek, etc). With the Inspirational Projects section containing 4 additional projects spanning ten pages, resources, and an index, this book is as thorough as it is fun to read and look at.The photos clearly show how to use the suggested materials, as well as finished samples. Samples provide adequate examples of a technique, in my opinion. With all the parts I love about this book, advanced and experienced artists beware - I doubt you'll learn many (if any) new techniques. It's a great compilation of techniques, don't get me wrong. There just aren't any new-to-me techniques - although I always enjoy seeing new ways each technique can be presented and used. I like Surface Treatment Workshop because of the vast array of techniques it covers all in one place.On a final note, it's been my experience that if there is something in the book you have questions about or don't understand, emailing Ms McElroy will produce a thorough response, quickly. I'm really glad I got this book - as much for the cool techniques as for the wonderful photographs.

I bought this book used, it is in wonderful condition and the seller shipped it promptly. The actual contents of the book are kind of boggling for an artist of my caliber. There are plenty of neat pictures and this book SHOWS lots of different media types but the instructions (to me) leave plenty to be desired. They just are not detailed enuf for a novice nor are many of the mediums anything I am even familiar with. I would recommend this book for any artist that has real training or is above an intermediate level. Sorry...I cannot recommend this book to a "novice level" multi-media artist.

I love this book! I was hesitant about it because the author's previous book "Image Transfer Workshop" is, in my humble opinion, one of the best books I've invested in (and I invest a lot in books!) and I wasn't sure that a new book could live up to that opinion. I am SO happy to report that this book is another home run, totally out-of-the-ball park winner of a book.The lay out is very well considered and the instructions are superlative - perfectly illustrated with photos that relate directly to the image. I couldn't wait to begin experimenting! One of the things that intrigued me as I read through the book was a description of Venetian Plaster - something I had never heard of before - "...Venetian Plaster gives you a unique finish that cannot be replicated with any other medium....". A tall order in my opinion. I got some of this miraculous stuff though and experimented and now have a new favorite mixed media tool. You can see my experiment from using the instructions on my other blog - [...].I can't wait to try more surface treatments from this book. It's a must have for the bookshelf of artists of all sorts - especially for fine arts, mixed media artists and visual journalers. You just can't go wrong by buying this book!

Great no-nonsense instuctional mixed-media book. This book doesn't waste half its pages on supplies and where to get them, and no other fluff or filler. Clear, straightforward directions. Overall an outstanding workshop that introduces a ton of new and easy techniques. Especially helpful are the troubleshooting tips and variations to the particular technique being discussed. Nothing here requires a lot of investment or expense, mostly using everyday and easy-to-find materials. Nicely illustrated.

Lots of fun stuff and cool effects. This is a really inspirational book. While I don't really like their examples all that much, they offer lots and lots of great ideas.

A well illustrated book with some interesting techniques for creating unusual mixed-media surfaces. The directions are clean and concise while the "troubleshooting" helps you determine what went wrong in your creative process. While some of the techniques are tried and true, others are innovative, resulting in new and different textures and surfaces. Normally I prefer to learn with DVD's, but this book is well worth your time to explore all it's creative possibilites presented by the authors. Most projects can be done with common materials and tools. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring their creative side, or anyone who wants to expand their arsenal of art techniques.

The Surface Treatment Workshop: Explore 45 Mixed-Media Techniques is full of inspirational ideas for preparing backgrounds for mixed-media art pieces, scrapbooking pages, and any other surface you might want to treat. I certainly could be used for fabric preparation with inks and dyes. Techniques include use of both traditional art materails, gels, glazes, etc., and unusual materials found on your household shelves. For a shot of inspiration, this is a good book to have in your collection.
