Review
"In a culture of sexual brokenness, young adults are in desperate need of resources to guide them in the pursuit of godly sexuality. Boa's Redeemed Sexuality is such a resource, providing a Christ-centered approach that moves beyond behavior management to real spiritual transformation. Combining biblical insights with clear application, Redeemed Sexuality offers church and college groups a compelling road map for Christlike sexual wholeness. Highly recommended!" (David Setran, Price-LeBar Professor of Christian Formation and Ministry, Wheaton College)"'Sexual brokenness is no longer the exception among young Christians; it is the norm,' writes Drew Boa in Redeemed Sexuality. We seem to be stuck in repeated cycles of sin, confession, repentance, sin, and then shame. I believe Boa's approach can break that cycle by focusing on spiritual formation for our sexuality through groups that build vulnerability, identity, and intimacy. In a pilot of this material, leaders witnessed breakthroughs for their students, who subsequently grew in spiritual authority. We need this book!" (Carolyn Carney, assistant regional director for spiritual formation, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA)"Redeemed Sexuality is just the book that needed to be written today―and Drew Boa did an amazing job writing it! The great strengths of this book are its practicality, applicability to both men and women, and focus on eighteen- to thirty-year-olds. If you're looking for a small group curriculum on sexual wholeness, buy this book immediately!" (John D. Foubert, author of How Pornography Harms)"Andrew Boa's experience as a campus leader taught him the power of Christ-centered community for healing sexual brokenness. In Redeemed Sexuality, Boa offers a study guide for daily sexual discipleship that will help all kinds of strugglers encounter the risen Lord Jesus and experience his life-giving grace." (Philip Ryken, president, Wheaton College)"Redeemed Sexuality offers a rare resource in today's Christian culture―a program for young adults to talk frankly in community about the pervasive issue of pornography and other forms of sexual brokenness. This guide is less about sin management and more an invitation to understand your story, your heart's holy desires, and especially the heart of God for redeeming the amazing gift of sexuality. This curriculum is well written by a man wise beyond his years. The Christian community needs to hear lots more from Andrew Boa." (Marnie C. Ferree, author of No Stones: Women Redeemed from Sexual Addiction, director of Bethesda Workshops, Nashville, Tennessee)"Redeemed Sexuality is an engaging and effective small group study that helps men and women grow into sexual integrity and wholeness based on spiritual discipleship. Drew has taken the time to research and gain training in teaching God's sexual truths and freedom. With many helpful exercises, he draws participants into examining their sexual development, growth, and healing in a small group setting that can create amazing community. I highly recommend this workbook and study as a way for churches to create greater health and healing in that important sexual area of life and relationships." (Doug Rosenau, cofounder of the Institute for Sexual Wholeness, author of A Celebration of Sex, Single and Sexually Whole, and Total Intimacy)"Redeemed Sexuality is a process-oriented group curriculum that is theologically grounded, biblically sound, practically oriented, and focused on sexual wholeness rather than merely avoiding sexual sin. I have personally witnessed its positive impact through the lives of friends and a family member. Redeemed Sexuality takes its participants on a challenging, beautiful, and grace-filled journey. It can build a foundation of healthy relating between men and women made in the image of God and provide a way of restoration for the sexually broken. It is one of the few curricula in this area that I recommend without reservation, and it is my belief that these groups will provide a much-needed gospel-centered process for sexual redemption and wholeness." (Michael Tso, director of training, His Mansion Ministries)"Struggles with sexual wholeness are as old as humanity, but the proliferation of mobile digital technology and the immediate access to pornography it allows has rewritten the rulebook for this generation. We can no longer ignore the epidemic of sexual brokenness young adults are facing. They are looking to their churches and Christian communities for help, but most lack the knowledge and resources to address the systemic sexual malformation evident today. Thankfully, Redeemed Sexuality has been created to help us address the deep roots of sexual brokenness with a holistic response. This curriculum honors the gravity of the struggle as well as the God-given dignity of the young people it is designed to help. That means avoiding simple answers or merely focusing on temporary behavioral changes. Redeemed Sexuality seeks deeper healing in the context of meaningful community. It is the right tool for our times." (Skye Jethani, author of With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God)"One of the greatest hindrances to overcoming lust and addiction is isolation. We see this over and over, yet so many Christians think they can slay their sin without any help. I love Redeemed Sexuality because it incorporates one of our greatest weapons: the body of Christ. I expect great waves of freedom to sweep over the church as we get honest and purposeful in community." (Jessie Minassian, founder of LifeLoveandGod.com, author of Unashamed: Overcoming the Sins No Girl Wants to Talk About)

Bottom line: As a Christian counselor and leadership coach for more than three decades, I am excited to see this resource (Redeemed Sexuality) become available! I completely agree with the initial reviews included with the book (or see the IV Press website). This is not hype. I highly recommend this book!It is a curriculum or guidebook for a peer-led small group experience to promote growth and healing for young adults in the area of sexual brokenness and meaningful relationships. The content is vital, comprehensive, well written, and biblically faithful. It challenges the reader to aim high yet wonderfully manages to be realistic, grace-filled and encouraging. Group participants are guided to pursue their unique personal journey toward Christ-centered sexual wholeness in light of God’s original design for interpersonal connection and intimacy. Boa understands that long-term success requires that participants actively engage in the material and process. He rightly advocates that the group format is key to that engagement and the hope of ongoing transformation. As I’ve noted, Redeemed Sexuality groups are facilitated by a peer-leader. Ample and wise guidance is provided in the book for that leader, guidance that is sure to help the other participants as well.Clearly, Boa has done well to acquire knowledge and wisdom from many reputable and experienced sources. I confess that I have not read as widely as he has, but I’d be surprised to find another resource, Christian or not, that better brings the best of it all together in one place. Again, I highly recommend this book!
When we first met, I knew Drew stood head and shoulders above me at that age. When he gave me permission to read his book manuscript, I knew Drew should publish it. When I encouraged him to pitch it to IVP, they loved it. You will too. At long last, we can drop the guilt and shame, stop pretending, talk about sex a lot, and discover how to redeem our individual stories. In the end, that's what we all want, isn't it? Don't wait. Get this book. Better, get several copies. Invite a few friends over. Hand out Drew's book. And ask if they'd like to go through it together with you.
It is about time someone wrote a book like this! Most resources on this topic have a wartime mentality, but Drew Boa writes as a friend who stands by your side as you begin this difficult journey. I work with college students and young adults and I cannot wait to get this book in their hands. After reading dozens on books on this subject, this book is high on my recommendation list due to how practical the applications are. Buy this book and take it seriously, it can change your life!
This is a very sensitive subject and the author does a fabulous job of leading anyone down this road of freedom according to the Bible. Well done and everyone should go through it with a small group of the same sex.
An insightful distillation of the best Christian wisdom for sexual wholeness meets an innovative and powerful small groups ministry structure in rising influencer Drew Boa’s "Redeemed Sexuality" to create a potent resource for healing and transformation with regard to one of if not the most widespread and destructive cancers of today’s society: sexual brokenness and addiction. The culmination of years of ministry leadership experience and a Master’s thesis, Drew Boa’s “sexual discipleship†curriculum anchors itself in the gospel of the grace, acceptance and love of Jesus Christ while pursuing freedom and healing from the destructive impacts of sexual sin, within the fertile soil of honest, vulnerable, committed community. Ancient foundational Christian theology meets contemporary neurobiology in Boa’s curriculum. Then, moving beyond mere cognitive knowledge of sexuality and Gospel truths (where they can stall out as passive propositional statements), Boa's curriculum teaches and trains participants to actively wield the Good News as an instrument of sanctification.Redeemed Sexuality follows three central themes:(1) Vulnerability. Boa’s opening chapters together function as an onramp for boarding the healing train as participants learn to practice transparency;(2) Identity. Boa offers practical tools for personal recovery and lasting freedom as participants receive God's truth as it relates to our fundamental sense of self;(3) Intimacy. Boa concludes with profound insights for discovering and practicing healthy sexuality as participants explore Christlike ways to grow closer to others--redeeming this God-given gift from its entanglement in sin and recovering God's design for it as part and parcel of all of our relationships. The excellent methodology and philosophy of ministry undergirding Boa's curriculum not only result in this effective curriculum but also serve as indispensable discipleship ministry models applicable to any variety of brokenness, not just sexual. These translatable qualities include:- How to Apply the Gospel: Real-life application of Gospel truths to ordinary realities of brokenness- Small group ministry philosophy: excellent approach/methods for creating an effective small group ministry- Pattern for whole curriculum: Translatable pattern/sequence of content for the beginning, middle, and conclusion of a small group ministry period/cycle/curriculum- Small Group Session Model: Translatable pattern/sequence of an effective small group learning session- Personal Practices: Set up for the small group meetings to be team huddles before the next period of game time, the model of takeaway discipleship practices are applicable for all kinds of Christian discipleship, especially those involving other kinds of brokenness, habitual sin, or addiction.Evidence of Boa's educational training in teaching and learning (under influences such as Jane Vella and Dan Haase) is readily apparent in the structure of each session and in the rich, extensive leader's notes section included at the back of the volume, which offers an educator's description of what happens in each sections of the curriculum along with wise tips and additional resources. The structure of this curriculum is translatable and effective, which I personally witnessed at the campus of Drew's thriving grassroots college small group ministry. Furthermore, the presentation is beautiful: its design and layout, choice of language, memorable catch phrases, and useful graphics. Participants will be marking, underlining, and quoting this book inside and outside of their small group sessions.Verdict:In our present cultural crisis of sexual brokenness, sexual addiction and shame have become the norm rather than the exception inside and outside the church. If members of your church, campus, or community—men or women—are affected by sexual brokenness (they are), I cannot recommend enough both the topical wisdom and the ministry approach presented beautifully in this book for your church, college, camp, community, or ministry.
