I was torn between two Catholic Bibles, but thankfully I made the right decision with this absolutely beautiful Douay-Rheims Bible. It has been awhile since I attended Mass, and so I wanted to go back--back to my roots, so to speak. I highly recommend this particular Bible, especially the durable leather bound. If you are going to pay so much for a Bible in the first place, you may as well get the best.

The best Bible I've ever owned. The translation is beautiful and has more depth than any other I've seen. The use of "archaic" language is not a minus; it is a must for the sake of accuracy, and it's not as though you need a college degree to make sense of it. The Bible's physical dimensions make it perfect for holding in one hand while turning pages with the other. The binding is split-leather, which is a step up from the imitation leather-bound Bibles that seem to be common.In comparison to the other two Bibles I own, this Bible is significantly lighter and smaller, likely due to how few annotations grace its pages. Annotations in Bibles are typically a bad thing, as they attempt to interpret the Word of God for you, which is very dangerous as they're not always correct, and there's also usually more to the verse than what the annotation says. If you want insight on a passage of the Bible, talk to a priest or other clergyman. Annotations are an eyesore anyway, and can very easily distract the reader.I've also noticed that despite this Bible being a bit slimmer than my others, it actually has more text. For reference, my other two are NRSV CE and NABRE. In Sirach/The Wisdom of Ben Sira (also known in this Douay-Rheims translation as Ecclesiasticus) 23:27 of the NABRE version it says: "Thus, all who dwell on the earth shall know, all who remain in the world shall understand, That nothing is better than the fear of the Lord, nothing sweeter than obeying the commandments of the Lord." In the NRSV (23:27) it says: "Those who survive her will recognize that nothing is better than the fear of the Lord, and nothing sweeter than to heed the commandments of the Lord." However, in this (D-R) version, it says (23:37): "And they that remain shall know, that there is nothing better than the fear of God: and that there is nothing sweeter than to have regard to the commandments of the Lord." For the first two translations, that verse marks the end of chapter 23 of Ecclesiasticus/Sirach. But for the D-R version, there is one extra verse (23:38): "It is great glory to follow the Lord: for length of days shall be received from him." This verse is not present at all that I can see in my other Bibles. This is a grave matter, because at what point does the Word of God cease being the Word of God? If I remove/change a letter, does that make it no longer the Living Word? How about a word? An entire verse, like in this case? I argue that any removal of text from the Word of God prevents it from being the Word of God.Also, there is no inclusive language in this translation. It has not been tarnished by contemporary movements like feminism. Always a plus.All in all, this is the best Bible translation for any Christian, especially a Catholic, to have. If in doubt, take the plunge.Edit: It has come to my attention that there are a few shortcomings with the construction quality of this Bible. Namely, the binding is glued and not sewn. This impacts the longevity of the book negatively, as glue breaks down over time (and much faster than thread used in sewn bindings). This is still a good Bible to have for its translation, Christ's words in red, and the prayers in the back of the book, but if longevity is what you're looking for you might try Baronius Press' D-R Bibles.

If you are a language nerd like me, you will LOVE this text. It's simply sublime. Genesis 1:2 and 2:7 are worth the price of admission alone for the rational minded evolutionists ("rational minded" here is not said with snobbery or righteousness).The notations and linkings of verses is great. Again this goes back to the language point I made. As for the linking of verses, maybe it's been that long since I've looked at a bible, but I don't remember seeing that before..The definitional index of sacraments and key teachings (ahh purgatory, the one major thing I remember going crazy about at bible study years ago...) and their validity in text is simply an indispensible tool. The photos are beautiful, though the "maps" are criminally undetailed. The timeline is interesting and quite useful as well. The list of popes, prayers, and text listings of feast days, and gospels for holy days makes this an absolutely perfect companion to have as you drag yourself back to mass for the first time in years, or sit in adoration for an hour.I'd suggest the 2 tone "stand firm in the lord" bible case for this. The burgundy, while not my preferred color (literally I ordered the first DR I found that also delivered next or same day), gives the text a proper dignified, and decidedly holy casing. The text size is just right. One minor gripe is there's only one ribbon (I remember catholic bibles as having approximately 35 ribbons all of various colors for all sorts of things), but it is a nice color.And of course, the translation. You simply cannot go wrong reading a Vulgate translation, as I've noted.If nothing else, as I said before, the translation itself is worth the purchase. The text reads so completely differently and is much richer. Also lends itself to some different spellings due to the fact that Latin lacks some written notation for certain sounds (so Noah is Noe and Sarah is Sara and Ham is Cham. My inner linguist drools.)Oh, and "Revelations"? Nope, it's listed here as"The Apocalypse"

Absolutely delighted with this Bible! The type is big enough that I can read it and I'm very impressed with the red-lettering of Jesus Christ's words. My "working" bible, to mark, highlight and scribble, is the Little Rock Study Bible .... this one is my read & think bible. The language is beautiful. It's pricey but at least you're getting something that's worth the money you paid.

High quality. The binding is strong, the cover is nice, and the paper is good quality. The best is that it is the Douay-Rheims for both the new and the old testament. There is not a more accurate translation into the English language than this.

I have nothing negative to say about this Bible. St. Jerome, in the 4th century, translated the Bible into Latin (Vulgate); the Douay-Rheims Bible is the English translation from the Latin Vulgate. So if you want the most accurate and direct translation, as close to the the original manuscripts as possible, this is the Bible for you.

I am a protestant and ordered this Bible so I could read the seven missing books that are not in the King James bible. I will keep this Bible and continue to study the missing books. I especially enjoy reading Ecclesiasticus. The pages are not any thinner than my other Bibles. The font size IS quite small but I use reading glasses once my eyes get strained. Other than the fine print, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

About the Author

Author Helen Salyer Perkins grew up in a very large extended family where most of the women were excellent cooks, Helen was exposed to many excellent dishes and recipes. As a result, when she married and became mother to three growing and always hungry boys, Helen learned to make delicious - at least most of the time - meals for them. Over the years, she added many and varied recipes and recipe books to her collection. For two years in the early 2000's, Helen was host of Kitchen Korner, a cooking program on WNVI, a local radio station in North Vernon, Indiana. She would review and pass on various recipes to her listeners five days a week. Many days, a guest was in the studio who shared their favorite recipe. A couple of the most memorable guests were former Indiana Governor Edgar Whitcomb and now Vice President of the United States Mike Pence. Both were just delightful and very interesting guests. Helen was born and grew up in Ohio but moved to Indiana nearly 40 years ago. The boys are grown now and have families of their own, but they contact her frequently to get the recipes for their favorite dishes. The most requested being "Bread Dressing / Stuffing". She has spent the past year sorting and organizing her stash of recipes in a concerted effort to pass them on for others to enjoy!

Yu Li Qiong was born in Anqing in the People's Republic of China in 1980. She holds a BA in literature from Nanjing University and an MA in dramatic art. A very beautiful and touching story, reflecting the life reality of many migrant families, both inside and outside China. Some details might be a little bit outdated, but the theme is everlasting.

Great book purchased for my class unit on Christmas around the world.

Very touching story! Had one already and bought an extra copy for my daughter's daycare. Her teachers love it. It has been circulating from classroom to classroom. This is one of the best Chinese children's book ever!

I really enjoyed reading this story to my children. My older ones can read it alone but it is a great story to start a conversation on how people live differently in other countries.

This was a great Chinese New Year book for little kids. The story is simple but it gives great insight on the role of New Year in modern China. Also, the illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book.

Adorable tale told by a young child named Mao-Mao about her family's celebration of Chinese New Year. She is all excited because not only is it Chinese New Year, but this is the only time of year that Mao-Mao sees her father, who builds houses far away from home. Daddy brings gifts and is eager to celebrate. He makes sticky rice balls and hides a coin in one of them. Mao-Mao rides her father's shoulders so she can see the Dragon parade. As the days of the celebration progress, dad is busy fixing and repairing the house doing all those things that have been neglected while he has been gone. Mao-Mao is sad because all too soon her father is packing to leave again. Before he leaves, she has a special gift for him.The illustrations are beautifully done; beautiful reds and graphic shapes keep the dynamic flowing. Text is simple, but so appropriate for the targeted age population of preschool through grade two. Underlying the book is the sad reality that many Chinese families are living in this migrant work situation. Highly recommended book to introduce multicultural themes to young children and as a teaching tool for Chinese New Year.

We read this book as part of our Chinese New Year Unit Study. And it was by far the best book we read! This book not only gives young readers a sense of what Chinese New Year is like but just as importantly what Chinese culture is like. From the first page where her dad is arriving after having worked out of the country for the year it began to spark questions and conversations with my 5-year-old. Very useful reference for the aspiring illustrator. The problem with books like this, of course, is anyone listed in it is going to get swamped with submissions, most of which will go straight into the garbage.But you can maximize the book's usefulness by making sure you have the most recent edition, and do a bit of research to make sure your submitting work to someone who might actually be able to use what you do (no nude figure studies to children's publishers etc.) This book is not a sure fire way to get published. But it is still useful, and worth the investment.

It is a marvelous introduction to indie game development, marketing, team building and operation, reflecting the author’s skill at presenting the knowledge he has acquired from years of experience as a game developer in the industry. It is exhaustive, clear, cogent, covering pretty much everything you should consider before starting your first indie game project.Don offers an expert practitioner’s perspective on every single issue an indie game developer or a start-up founder may encounter. It can be a standard textbook in the field for anyone - whether you are new to the indie game business, thinking about starting out your first indie game project, or looking for practical suggestions for the game release. Yet it is written in such an engaging style that I enjoyed reading it for pleasure.Each part of the book is divided into three sections: asking readers fundamental questions about the decisions in making indie games; personal experiences and flavored stories; discussions and thinking of the questions. I found the process of writing down my answers to the questions is pretty much like mediation or retrospection, as those questions are imperative when you start but might get forgotten as the project proceeds. The first few chapters are focusing on thoughts before starting your first game, whether it’s your personal side-project or a product from a small team. It covers topics from how to choose the right engine, platform, and marketing strategy, to when and whether to adjust your game genre and style for a wider audience and market. The chapters focusing on these alone is well worth the read, for all game designers and developers. Because of the question-and-answer structure, combined with personal experiences and stories (the first one is from the author’s boyhood regret), the book is easy to read and follow. This is one of the few books that is focused on helping the reader from starting the very first project to launch and in the future build an indie game studio that is financially stable.

An interesting book, learning from the insights of a master of the industry from the beginning to the present, even for someone like myself in a separate profession, particularly because Mr. Daglow has perspective relating to all organizational levels.

I (gratefully) spend much of my time creating graphics, motion and interactive concepts for clients - and love it, but I've had trouble carving out the time for a passion project of my own for the past couple of years. When I finally made the time. I then struggled to fire up my inspiration engines. It was like I had forgotten where to start. This book's unique format of asking the reader questions has promoted all sorts of new creative and strategic thinking around my new game concept. I'm still only part-way through the book and am already stoked and excited to get going on it. It's not marketed as such but it's am amazing cure for creative blockage!

Don does an amazing well organized job identifying the important questions all game developers should ask. This is a great read for those looking to make games for the first time or for veteran game developers looking for a reminder of why they do what they do.

I searched for address books with a spiral and this came up with the rest. It does not have a spiral. It also has no tabs for the letters. A-Z is on every single page and the letter for the name you are looking for is in black. That's the only way to find it is to flip through the whole book. The outside is so pretty,but I'm not filling this one out. I think I will order a different one instead. Too much of a hassle just to find a phone number.
