What this book is, is an invaluable collection of knowledge, learned over four decades of game development and design, and refined through conversations and interactions with dozens of independent publishers and developers. Is it a guidebook to success? Perhaps, if you have the creative spark within you.If you are just starting in the games development industry, or if you’ve been around awhile and find yourself making the same mistakes, this book is for you. It’s a reference book that starts by asking you some important questions about your game idea, your business ideas, what your goals are, and many more things. Questions you may not have considered, and if you’re completely honest, may surprise you with your own answers. Then it goes with you through each of your answers, helping you see the wisdom or the folly of your ideas. There may be large sections where you are nailing it and the information here just verifies that. But I’m willing to bet, especially for new developers looking to self-publish, there are topics here you never even considered.As someone who has been in this industry for 23 years, I have seen and played a lot of games of all types. I read this book during Thanksgiving and loved it! It is a marvelous introduction to indie game development, marketing, team building and operation, reflecting the author’s skill at presenting the knowledge he has acquired from years of experience as a game developer in the industry. It is exhaustive, clear, cogent, covering pretty much everything you should consider before starting your first indie game project.Don offers an expert practitioner’s perspective on every single issue an indie game developer or a start-up founder may encounter. It can be a standard textbook in the field for anyone - whether you are new to the indie game business, thinking about starting out your first indie game project, or looking for practical suggestions for the game release. Yet it is written in such an engaging style that I enjoyed reading it for pleasure.Each part of the book is divided into three sections: asking readers fundamental questions about the decisions in making indie games; personal experiences and flavored stories; discussions and thinking of the questions. I found the process of writing down my answers to the questions is pretty much like mediation or retrospection, as those questions are imperative when you start but might get forgotten as the project proceeds. The first few chapters are focusing on thoughts before starting your first game, whether it’s your personal side-project or a product from a small team. It covers topics from how to choose the right engine, platform, and marketing strategy, to when and whether to adjust your game genre and style for a wider audience and market. The chapters focusing on these alone is well worth the read, for all game designers and developers. Because of the question-and-answer structure, combined with personal experiences and stories (the first one is from the author’s boyhood regret), the book is easy to read and follow. This is one of the few books that is focused on helping the reader from starting the very first project to launch and in the future build an indie game studio that is financially stable.

An interesting book, learning from the insights of a master of the industry from the beginning to the present, even for someone like myself in a separate profession, particularly because Mr. Daglow has perspective relating to all organizational levels.

I (gratefully) spend much of my time creating graphics, motion and interactive concepts for clients - and love it, but I've had trouble carving out the time for a passion project of my own for the past couple of years. When I finally made the time. I then struggled to fire up my inspiration engines. It was like I had forgotten where to start. This book's unique format of asking the reader questions has promoted all sorts of new creative and strategic thinking around my new game concept. I'm still only part-way through the book and am already stoked and excited to get going on it. It's not marketed as such but it's am amazing cure for creative blockage!

Don does an amazing well organized job identifying the important questions all game developers should ask. This is a great read for those looking to make games for the first time or for veteran game developers looking for a reminder of why they do what they do.

Thorough, inspiring, and filled with hard-earned gems of wisdom.
