grand daughter loves the book

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She's going to be so excited!

Ir is for my kid. Ok

I borrowed this from the library for my 8-year-old daughter who is a huge MJ fan. Of course, she read it cover to cover as soon as I handed it to her. I think it's compelling and good for kids to see some of the struggles he went through as an emerging artist. I hope that it encouraged her to stand up for being true to herself and her art, which is what I think this is about. Unlike the other reviewer, I don't think mentioning his addictions would have been appropriate--not because children should be lied to but because it's just kind of a complicated issue for little kids to grasp. You know, if you feel your petite artiste might have some addiction issues in the future, as many artists do, then it would be a good idea to use MJ as an example of how very creative people tend to self-medicate and how to prevent that from happening. My kids know what drugs are but talking about addictions in someone who hated himself when he was such an amazing person--well, that seems like something parents and educators should talk to kids about, not something you can explain in a children's book. This book is about how one of the greatest artists of our time stayed true to his art. As far as what the other reviewer stated about it not talking about his charities or being made an easy target in the media, the book actually mentions both.

good book-nothing new but good for collection

I was really disappointed in this book. As a library media specialist, I expected more of it for my students although what can you really expect for five bucks? Michael Jackson led such an interesting and complicated life. I'm not saying that we need to tell young children every little detail of every trial Michael had, but nor should we sugar coat a person's entire life. A graphic novel is an excellent way to get young or reluctant readers to read, but let's make sure we are giving them all the facts. Let's see more about growing up, the charity work he did, how being such a pop icon made him an easy target for accusations, and how a horrible addiction ended his life. I'm not saying it should go into graphic detail, but come on people, there is nothing worse than lying to kids!

I'm certainly not a chilango (a native of Mexico City), but over the past 30 years I have made about 10 trips to this extraordinary basket-case of a city, the most recent trip being December of 2011. I thoroughly enjoy visiting there, but I am not blind to its problems and dangers. In my younger days, I'd most often go there alone; but even when accompanying someone who was new to the city, except for the occasional guided tour we'd most often walk or travel by metro or cab (and, as several writers suggest, it is in walking about it that one truly gets the fullest experience of Mexico City). Thus, I like to think that my knowledge of the city's broad center (where most of these essays are set) is fairly thorough. So, reading this fine collection of essays about life in the D.F. was, for me, a rather strange experience. Very often, I found myself saying, "Yes--that indeed once was true, but now . . ."First, the reasons you, as a possible visitor to Mexico City, should consider buying this book: Ruben Gallo's introduction, which sketches out the long history of the city and then critiques the usual theorizing of the D.F.--the nostalgic lamenting of the loss of Mexico City's former graceful status of the City of Palaces--in favor of a theory arguing that, especially since the immediate aftermath of the 1521 conquest, the city has constantly been remaking itself; all of the essays in the section called "Places," which still ring true to me; the various photo-essays, in particular Francis Alys' "Ambulantes"; Alma Guillermoprieto's "Garbage" (a subject which, for fairly obvious reasons, is something of an obsession for chilangos); and Elena Poniatowska's beautifully-told "The Earthquake," which focuses solely on the story, told in their own words, of a woman who happened to be rescued from her collapsed building by her nephew, yet which somehow ends up conveying, better than just about anything about the 1985 quake that I've read, the heartbreak of those terrible days (and the years that followed). Also, students and admirers of writing about urban spaces will find much to like and learn from in all these pieces.Now the note of caution: The possible visitor needs to know that some of these pieces have become dated in their details. They do indeed give one an accurate sense of the city as I found it to be from the early-'80s to early-'90s--roughly the period that most of these pieces were written. That time, suffice it to say, was not a happy one in the life of the D.F.: air pollution so bad that the State Department classified our embassy there as a hazardous-duty post; underemployment resulting in beggars, day-laborers, vendors and street performers (and many other, less-savory characters) clogging the sidewalks and delaying traffic on the main streets; trash everywhere; all-but-denuded green spaces--including Chapultepec Park; formerly-elegant and vibrant neighborhoods gone to seed; and clearly overwhelmed city services. However, over the years since this book's publication, the city has dramatically expanded public and alternate transportation (12 Metro lines built or under construction; light-rail lines extending into the suburbs; dedicated bus lanes and, more recently, bike lanes and rent-a bike stands throughout the city's heart); air quality seems to have improved a great deal; the Centro seems to be a desirable place to live now; in general, the broad middle of the city feels much safer than just about any other big city you can think of, including many in the States. None of this is to say that Mexico City is now some sort of urban paradise; and it obviously isn't Gallo's fault that some of these pieces seem less true now than they once were. It's simply to say that the potential buyer needs to know that the city that is these essay's subject has changed fairly substantially since their publication--in some cases, clearly for the better.

This Reader contains several stories that explain the background of various landmarks in the Distrito Federal. Each chapter makes a great day read and they are well-written and pertinent, even for frequent visitors.

I have a thing for both Mexico and for non-fiction. This interesting collection of essays about D.F. satisfies my curiosity.

This is a wonderful book, I strongly recommend it.

Overall, a very good anthology of diverse material on Mexico City. The focus on just the one city--the DF--is wise and unique: many readers/books would try to encompass all of Mexico or Mexican minorities or women in Mexico or whatever have you. But by narrowing the scope via geography and openly showcasing Mexico City as a geographical unit worthy of its own anthology (which it is, certainly) this book opens up many varied aspects of the locale from foodways to politics to history. Indeed, instead of having too-narrow a focus, in fact the book is far too short to come close to cutting into the deep layers of Mexico City, though it's a fine place to start--the best place insofar as social sciences I would say. My only complaints are:1) It's already very dated: we need a new edition of this fine book for it to address today's Mexico City. I am awaiting the day when anthologies will be websites instead of books and constantly updated akin to Wikipedia or Wikitravel. In many cases, the age of this book really shows though that should not discourage anyone from reading it because it does still offer a real wealth of insight.2) The book simply should have been longer. Aside from the cost of printing a slightly larger book, I don't see any real obstacle to making it longer, either, as many course readers number over 600 pages. This one clocks less than 350 pages and there are plenty of worthwhile essays on Mexico City in the public domain--historical documents, even--so copyright isn't a viable problem. The editorial approach taken has been superb: nearly all the included material is great. However, the editor could have sourced even more material to produce a far more robust book. "Readers" really serve two purposes: to educate a seminar student or other person on the topic at hand via reading the whole damn book or, to serve as a reference book for someone interested/involved in the subject. For the latter, the more material the better.I hope for a new edition of this book soon. For now, it's still very worthwhile despite my small misgivings

Awesome book. This books paints a picture of Mexico City like no other. It's a collection of 30-some essays and reportage. Some have a historical perspective (e.g., the Metro system just after it was built), while others are very recent. This isn't a guidebook, but it will give you a better understanding of the city's underpinnings than a stack of Lonely Planets ever will.Most of the authors are Mexicans; a lot of the essays are famous in Mexico, and appearing in English for the first time. There is a level of authenticity here that is not reached by competing books (e.g., David Lida's 'First Stop in the New World' -- which is more of an American journalist's perspective on things.)The writing is exciting, artistic, and well-chosen.

Deborah L. Rhode is Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law and Director of the Stanford Center on Ethics at Stanford University. She has served as president of the Association of American Law Schools, Chair of the American Bar Association's Commission on Women in the Profession, and senior counsel for the House Judiciary Committee on impeachment issues. This book is nothing but anti-lawyer propaganda. The author uses the most inflammatory and misleading ways to state facts in order to foster hatred of lawyers. I will update this review of I can force myself to finish the book.Access to Justice by Deborah L. Rhode is an extremely biased book which does nothing but support and feed into the negative perception of lawyers. The book is so slanted and prejudicial it’s hard to take seriously, which is a shame because access to justice is a real concern. The author takes the characteristics of the minority of lawyers and blindly attributes them to all lawyers—completely writing off the majority of well-meaning, dedicated lawyers.Rhode cites numerous obstacles court-appointed attorneys face in accessing adequate resources “essential to an effective defense,” but then lambastes court-appointed attorneys for providing inadequate representation. She also heavily criticizes retained attorneys, opining they have little incentive to prepare for trial if they are paid beforehand…as if all attorneys who manage to secure a payment beforehand believe their job is already done. She criticizes attorneys who get plea bargains for their clients. She criticizes attorneys who thoroughly defend clients because it interferes with judicially controlled appointments… shouldn’t that be a criticism towards judges and a mitigating point for attorneys? If they essentially get punished for doing their best, that isn’t their fault and it’s amazing they even keep doing it.Rhode’s perspective on Pro Bono hours is convoluted. Pro Bono is understood to be professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment, or charitably. Mandating Pro Bono hours necessarily contradicts the very meaning and significance of the concept. Mandatory uncharged hours of work is different from mandatory charity.Almost all of the statistics in Rhode’s book are given in an inflammatory, misleading, and provocative manner. Her statement that “fewer than 10% of lawyers accept referrals from legal aid or bar-sponsored poverty-related programs,” completely disregards lawyers who take on their own Pro Bono clientele. People do call law offices and inquire about these things, and many lawyers inform clients of the opportunity to have work done Pro Bono. Many lawyers also offer sliding-scale fees or payment plans to ensure clients are able to afford the services they need. None of this is mentioned by the author.As for frivolous cases, of course there are frivolous cases that should never have been initiated or litigated. It’s the same way in any profession, an embarrassing side effect of the human condition—you’ll inevitably have a few idiot colleagues who are seriously lacking common sense and/or ethics. However, Rhode continues to vilify attorneys by mocking all trial lawyers, and especially personal injury lawyers.Rhode makes it sound as if personal injury attorneys are unnecessary leeches that prey on injured people who are hoping for some sort of compensation that they could actually get without an attorney. I can’t help but wonder if she has ever had to deal with a personal injury case of her own or anyone close to her. You DO need an attorney to fight for you.People don’t want to just give you money, whether they’re at fault or not. They will make it sound like you have no grounds to ask for more than what they may offer, if they offer anything at all, and that’s where attorneys step in. Just because a personal injury settlement may sound absurd at first, doesn’t mean it is. Life-long medical treatment and maintenance is incredibly expensive. Loss of work or the ability to work is financially and psychologically devastating. The effects on one’s personal life can be unbelievably frustrating and unfair. A personal injury settlement isn’t just to redress the incident as a static point in time, it’s to redress past and future pain and suffering.Rhode also took an article written for a humor column in the Orlando Sentinel in 1993, a historically biased newspaper, and made it into a case against lawyers. A company called SmithKline Beecham made denture adhesive with benzene, a known carcinigen. Benzene is known to cause acute myelogenous leukaemia, acute myelocytic leukaemia, chronic myeloid and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma, and increase for total lymphatic and haematopoietic neoplasms. (IARC Sci Publ. 1988;(85):3-18.) “[Benzene] is used mainly as a starting material in making other chemicals, including plastics, lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides. In the past it was also commonly used as an industrial solvent (a substance that can dissolve or extract other substances) and as a gasoline additive, but these uses have been greatly reduced in recent decades.” (https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/benzene.html)The FDA recalled all of the SmithKline Beecham denture adhesive. An individual who used this product contacted his lawyer and initiated a lawsuit. A group of lawyers then initiated a class-action lawsuit which resulted in a direct-mailing notification to all other known customers, as well as published ads informing people of the danger of the product. The company was made to refund all customers who could prove they purchased the product and sent coupons to those who claimed to have purchased it but could not prove it.Despite all of the cancers benzene is known to cause, and the fact people were applying it directly to the soft tissues of their mouth twice a day, Rhode mocks these people and “their ‘victimhood.’” Just because they weren’t showing signs of cancer caused by a product that had been on the market for about 7 years, didn’t change the fact they were at risk. Soft tissues are exceptionally vulnerable to cancer and when you’re swallowing benzene denture adhesive residue all day, every day, you’re in even more danger. Her mockery of the people and their lawyers was ignorant and unprofessional. I could not find any evidence to suggest the case was actually frivolous, other than repeated prints of the same humor-column article she based her own quip on.Her statement that trial lawyers will make $75 billion in the next quarter century is extremely provocative and stated in a way to elicit shock and anger. That same statistic means $3 billion per year. There are over 1.3 million lawyers in America, and it’s impossible to tell what qualifies as a “trial lawyer” to Rhode. Technically, all 1.3+ million lawyers could qualify as “trial lawyers” since they can all go to trial! Even if only the leftover .3 million, or 300,000, lawyers qualified as “trial lawyers,” they would only be bringing in $10,000 each per year. Or if only 10,000 of the 1.3 million lawyers qualified as “trial lawyers,” they’d each bring in $300,000. That’s a ton of money, for sure, but nothing overwhelmingly ridiculous like it sounds when you say $75 billion in the next quarter century.All in all, this book is very difficult to read due to Rhode’s blatant contempt for attorneys. Her slanted and misleading statistics are beyond frustrating, and her overall attitude does nothing to help the very problem she arguing about. Vilifying attorneys, making the public hate them even more, and lambasting them for things out of their control is insane.

The author has a clear bias. Giving little credit where credit is due and has a "holier-than-thou" tone. On the bright side, it was one of the cheapest textbooks I've ever had to purchase.

Nice book with great tips and directions for making No-knead bread in about three hours. Much less mess and using few utensils means little clean-up. The breads that I have made have been perfect and delicious. I highly recommend watching "artisanbreadwithsteve" on YouTube. Steve Gamelin has several videos on making breads, pizza, pretzels, and sweet rolls. The videos that he made in the fall of 2014 show the Turbo method.

This book is so helpful when I bake bread. I have tried several kinds of breads and several different ways of baking, and so far my family a d I love the results! I have not bought store bread since I got this book. It makes baking so much easier.

I love the Turbo Method! I just happened to have two 6" round Anchor Hocking Pie dishes, so I made the The Rosemary Bread (mini round baker) recipe first. The second recipe I made from the book was the Honey Oatmeal Bread. I used the technique described in this book to Garnish the bread with oats and the coating turned out beautifully! Happy Holidays!

Though not all will agree with every Augustinian theory Professor Cary conveys (I certainly do not), one cannot deny his depth of understanding and his ability to reason for his views. The minor disagreement with those views serves only as a stimulant to better understand the topic of Augustinian thought. Which leads me to the one criticism, this course is far too short.This is a study gaining great interest especially now with the rise of Cardinal Ratzinger, perhaps the most influential Augustinian philosopher of modern times, to the Papal office. So much could be done to share the insights of Dr. Ratzinger and others concerning the rich philosophical depths of Augustine. We hope that the Teaching Company will accept the challenge.

This series of 12 audio lectures is an excellent little overview of Augustine, his life, times, and philosophy. Most of the series focuses on his writings and philosophy as well as their evolution over time, often with discussion of the historical context in which they were created as well as some useful comparing/contrasting to extant philosophies of the day (particularly Platonism and Manicheism.)Early in the series there were some interesting and important re-definitions of some contemporary words. This book, written with his wife, Jonna is another great opportunity for Ben Affleck to bring Tony Mendez to the big screen. It is so easy, amid scandal and disappointment to forget that there are people risking their lives every day to keep America safe from her enemies, both foreign and domestic. This book recounts how, in the midst of a major mole in the fabric of the Clandestine Services, Tony Mendez and his able and talented crew rescued a high ranking Soviet officer and his wife and child from the oppression and prosecution facing them in the Soviet Union. It's a real spy tale that is brilliant, exciting and a true page turner!

Spy Dust is a terrific source of tradecraft, for readers who want to know how accurate spy novels are. The book delivers on content, but not on narrative. The writing is trite, the author’s coy and self-involved, and except for the final escapade, the tale is wooden and stale.

This book does not discuss ARGO, which Tony figured in. A little more on their role during the Ames-Hansen era would interesting -- it's covered but missing the big picture. The book makes one wonder why so few of our agents were exfiltrated -- GTSPHERE for example. It's thought provoking on that count. You'll wonder about both the CIA and the FBI when you read about Howard's easy get away.

If you saw the details of this story in a movie, you’d roll your eyes at many points in disbelief. But unlike fiction, the lives of real people were on the line. High-tech spyware, disguises, body-switches, highly orchestrated break-ins and escapes, and all of it true. I couldn’t put this book down.

Tony Mendez is an excellent writer. Oftentimes spy books can be rather dry; however, Mendez manages to keep it interesting while still being informative. Like all books about secret organizations, there could be more details, but due to the required secrecy sometimes details can't be included. If you like this book you should read master of disguise. Highly recommend.

I really liked this book. It builds the suspense and intrigue of CIA operations well and gives the ins & outs of planning and running several highly sensitive and dangerous field ops. I would have given it a 5 except there was too much emphasis on the Tony and Jonna story rather than the cloak and dagger. Nonetheless. I still do recommend it highly!

Great and VERY interesting book by the real Tony Mendez and his current wife, both former CIA agents. (He of "Argo" fame.)
