Arrived on time, but cover was detached and the first page was scrunched. Also, the book had a lot of writing in it. Very dissatisfied, since it was for my son.

This little book explains what was known when it was written(1971) about how energy can be stored in molecules like glucoseand adenosine triphosphate (ATP, the universal energy carryingmolecule in living cells) and released again later to power thoseprocesses in the cell that require energy input in order toproceed. The author was one of the leaders in research inunderstanding the thermodynamics of biochemical reactions. Itsmajor topics include:- Overall energy flow, from sun to plants to animals and to final dissipation as heat.- Thermodynamics and the nature of "free energy".- ATP. The explanation of what exactly is a "high energy phosphate bond" and why energy is released when it is hydrolyzed is the clearest I have seen in my limited reading.- Photosynthesis.- Biosynthesis, the synthesis of sugars, proteins, lipids and other biological molecules from simpler precursors.- Active transport, the "pumping" of ions and molecules against chemical or electrical gradients.- Physical motion, especially in muscles.So long as it is read as a supplement to more contemporaryaccounts, I think this is still an interesting book and stillworth reading. I especially liked it for its clear focus on theissue of energy transfer and its clear presentation of themeaning of "free energy". Lehninger was one of the "stars" ofbiochemistry and, even where his exposition is now seriously outof date, it is always interesting to follow the thinking of afine and educated mind working on a hard and interesting problem.Of course much has been learned that Lehninger couldn't haveknown in 1971. There are places where he says "it is not knownhow ...", or "several alternative theories have been postulatedfor ...", but now in 2007, we do have definitive explanations forthose unknowns. So _Bioenergetics_ is no longer a cutting edgebook and can no longer be read in the hope of getting anup-to-date understanding of the biochemical issues involved.Although the book is old, from my inexpert point of view, itappears that there were no serious errors in it. The author onlysays something is true if the evidence supporting it was strong.Where something was not well known, the author was very clearabout saying so and, where speculation was indulged in, it wasalso clear that he was speculating. You won't learn the latestresults in molecular biology from it, but I think it can be readwithout fear of absorbing false theories.Some background in organic chemistry is desirable in order tounderstand the book. A very basic introductory course issufficient. Without that the book can still be read and enjoyed,but it will be hard reading.I give this book 5 1971 stars. It wouldn't be fair to rate it interms of 2007 science, but I think if you've read this far in myreview you'll get the idea of its value.

Was a steal for the price, there’s quite a few more recipes than 500. I was expecting just 501 recipes or 510, butthere was quite a bit more (bonus points!) – The recipes make delicious meals and most of them don’t require much work,and that’s another reason why I love my Air Fryer. Thank you Gloria lee.

I bought this for my dad who has been put on a very strict diet. There are lots of great sounding recipes and most of them are easy enough for him to cook. A lot of people complain that there aren’t any pictures, but for me I think pictures probably would have made this book a lot more expensive and a lot thicker. There are 500 recipes so most pages have 2-4 recipes per page. Adding pictures would have taken too much room. Overall pleased with my purchase.

Delicious recipes according to myself and my group of friends! Needed to sharp up my cooking skills as I’ve beenbasically eating the same meals for awhile now. This was a good buy for introducing me to some new recipes.

The book has no pictures and is divided into a few sections - starters, main, dessert but after that it is a free for all. You could have a beef stew recipe, followed by a fried seafood recipe, followed by a soup recipe, then another beef recipe, etc. with no index to search for specific ingredients such as beef, chicken. Most of the recipes also use an insert pot to make soups, stews, etc but I was really looking for actual "air fried" foods.

I wanted easy recipes with everyday ingredients. There are some but not as many as I thought. I get ideas and make it my own

Very disappointed with this purchase. No index to look up main ingredient. For example, if you want to make a meal using chicken, you can't go to the poultry section. You have to look through the entire 15 plus pages of recipes listed under the Table of Contents. I would not recommend this recipe book to anyone. Save your money.

My entire families loves this coloring book! It is age appropriate for kids as young as preschoolers because because of the large scale of the pictures. It is also appropriate for older kids and adults because it has smaller scale portions of the pictures.. We had so much fun coloring it because of the variety and the interesting illustrations. This is a great summer activity book for the whole family.

This is a WONDERFUL coloring book! I absolutely love its simplicity, its size, and the quality of the paper.The book also makes me feel at home when Im away. Im currently traveling so having this book with me keeps me"connected" to my home. I also love that I can enjoy this book with my little neighbor who is my coloring partner.I can't wait to show this book to her! What a charming and delightful coloring book! I like the square size of the book and all the wonderful drawings of boats, kayaks, beach, kid's, airplanes, sea gulls, dolphins, underwater sea life, beach signs, tractor, fire truck, car with a surf board on top, surfers, lifeguard station and other beach sights. I especially love the dog in the boat with the letter "B" on his collar tag....."B" for Blue! I'm looking forward to Darcy's volume 2 coloring book! This coloring book does not disappoint! I am recommending this fantastic coloring book to all my friends with children both girls and boys.

Such a nice portable size, not too big, not too small. I purchased several to entertain the children that come to my office with their parents. The pictures are good for all ages & look very pretty when the colors are added. Would make a great gift with a set of highlighters or colored pencils.

What a beautiful coloring book! I sent this to my nephew and he absolutely loves it. The images are all about beach life and fun in the sun! I'd definitely recommend this to any child who loves to color.

This is such an great coloring book with adorable, nostalgic beach scenes. I purchased 2 for my office to entertain the children of clients that often come in with their parents. It is such a big hit that I am going to have to buy several more and keep them in stock. The children fall in love with it and want to take it home so I have lost the ones already purchased :) I plan to also keep a few at home for my nieces and nephews!

We live close to the beach and this coloring book captures so many of the scenes we have encountered and enjoyed here over the years. I especially like the 1957 Chevy with the surf board on its top. This is a wonderful and creative coloring book that our grandchildren are not only going to enjoy using but it will also stimulate all kinds of conversations regarding the beach scenes that are so beautifully illustrated. I can highly recommend this book by Darcy and I for one hope that more books are to follow.

This book is a real gem, an encyclopedia of deep research into the golf swing. I spent many a happy hour perusing through the copy in my high school library when I was a teen on my school golf team, so I leaped at the chance to have my own copy finally many years later. Although this was written decades ago, you might be surprised at the depth and variety of articles to be found in here. It is a very scientific approach that the authors took, with detailed high-speed analysis, deeply detailed discussions, and it is lavishly illustrated. I would not claim that this will help your game more than books by modern swing 'gurus', but there is info here that you cannot easily find anywhere else. I you have a scientific bent or just want to learn as much about the swing as you can, this is a great addition to your golf library.

While this book was written quite a few years ago, the basic science behind it is solid.Using high speed cameras, the authors analyze every aspect of the golf swing dispelling many myths behind the swing. It looks at what makes up swing speed, how certain ball flight is achieved, and much more.If you're a Dave Pelz fan, you'll love this book. I find Pelz and the authors here to be of similar mind and approach.This book really isn't for teaching your golf swing, however. There really aren't any drills for you to do, but it explains what you want to achieve, just not HOW to do it.The science behind this book personally help me drop from a 6 to a 4 index, and improve my driving accuracy from about 45% to 60%, IN ONE YEAR. The reason? My instructor was wrong in talking about ball flight and what causes the ball to do certain things. This caused me to try to adjust things in my swing that didn't need adjusting.

I came across the previous edition of this book many years ago in a local library and always wondered since if it had ever been updated. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it had been. What makes this book unique is that it was about a project supported by several scientists, some of whom were not even golfers, but who thought the project was interesting. These scientists analyze many aspects of the game of golf and debunk several myths surrounding the game. This was one of about thirty books about golf that I read at that time and the one I found most interesting.

First, I should state that I enjoy physics, so it will come as no surprise that I sought to find a book that would deal with the physics of golf. I hesitated for a moment, since the book was initially written some 40 years ago! After weighing the argument, however, that "it's STILL physics, regardless of the era!", I decided to purchase the book (which was updated to address the newer generation of golfers). I certainly do NOT regret the purchase, and find myself reading and re-reading various chapters. Being one who practices the PPGS style of golf swing, used in the 60s & 70s, I wanted to know exactly WHY the ball reacts as it does. I am more than pleased with the author's explanations, which are well within reach of the average person's knowlege of the principles of physics.

While this book has been in print since about 1968, there has never been a better one for understanding golf....in my opinion.Modern test equipment and modern golf equipment have served to verify what these men found about hitting the ball.They produce detailed analysis of set-up, swing and equipment and yet they always yield to what works.For example, in their section on putting they state "Once a player has adopted any of the many possible simple methods, putting is largely a matter of confidences."If you really want to improve your swing and your shots, then read and practice this book above all others.BIll Fontaine

On average, residents live five feet below sea level and resign themselves to an annual rainfall greater than Seattle's. Historic neighborhoods that sprang up on isolated ridges of high ground remain connected by a system of bridges and ferries, and city streets follow the crazy bends of the Mississippi instead of a logical grid pattern.Over the past 300 years, New Orleans has been battered by hurricanes, floods, and generations of laissez le bon temps rouler (let the good times roll) government. Between 1682 and 1803, the Louisiana Territory was transferred from France to Spain, then back to France, before being sold (20 days later) to the United States. Even ham and cheese sandwiches are served on fresh French bread, unless you're crazy enough to specify "sliced."Rollicking ethnic festivals fill New Orleans's calendar as well, led by Mardi Gras, which crowns a monthlong season of parades and masked balls. Then for two full-tilt weeks in April and May, the annual jazz and Heritage Festival crams the New Orleans Fair Grounds and clubs throughout town with a roundup of jazz, blues, R&B, rock, and gospel music. Meanwhile, smaller fests are scheduled nearly every weekend throughout Louisiana, and die-hard party I animals can bark around the clock on frenetic Bourbon Street in the French Quarter.The other narrow streets of the French Quarter are dense with steep-roofed Creole cottages and majestic town houses laced with ironwork. But this 90-square-block living museum is above all a busy neighborhood where more than 7,000 permanent residents sleep, eat, work, and carouse. I've taken two 2-week trips to the Crescent City and have planned 60-70% of the activities around advice the first edition of this book gives. It's neither stodgy nor preachy, and doesn't cater exclusively to upscale or downscale crowds, either -- so no matter your mood/budget, you'll find something good to do or eat in the city when you plan with this book. Also, it gets deep into the stuff the natives like: my best anecdote is Sid-Mar's, this crawfish shack we eat at that's WAY off the beaten path, having read the recommondation from the book. While we were staying at a B&B, the proprietor asked us where we were eating one of the nights we were staying there. When we answered "Sid-Mar's," she looked at us cross-eyed and said "How on earth did you figure out to go there? It took us two years to find that place, and we go there all the time now. Ain't it great?" The book is concise and pithy when the situation calls for it, is hip yet down-to-earth enough that you can trust it. Can't say anything else, except that I'm upgrading to the fourth edition so I can plan this year's return to New Orleans.

Amazon has the bad habit of lumping reviews of multiple editions of a book without regard as to author/editor or publisher, to the detriment of the buyer's choosing an edition, so I write to make a few comments on the 984,562 editions of "Paradise Lost" listed for purchase. I have used the titles as listed by Amazon to help find the editions I refer to, and, with the exception of the books by Kastan, Lanzara, and BookCaps, the ones I discuss below are ones I own and am familiar with.The version with an introduction and comments by Pullman has text that is large and readable, line numbers and some nice illustrations, taken from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688. It is a nice copy for those who want just the text of the poem. The text is based on Stephen Orgel's 2008 Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics) which has been modernized presumably with respect to capitalization, spelling and punctuation. The comments by Pullman are worthwhile, but, while he may be a very good writer, he is not a scholar of Milton. Unlike Orgel, there are no annotations or notes to explain Milton's often arcane language and allusions.For readers seeking annotated versions, I suggest the following.The ultimate edition of Milton Alastair Fowler's Milton: Paradise Lost: it has been called the Bible of Milton scholars; one review I saw called it suitable for graduate students majoring in Milton. It is one of the few available based on the first edition of "Paradise Lost", published in 1667, but Fowler states that it also includes the additions made in the second edition of 1674 --- the version that most of today's editors use. Know that Fowler has produced a very, very scholarly version with many, many notes, sometimes to the point that they leave only two or three lines of the poem on the page, so I strongly urge using the "Look Inside" feature before deciding to buy it. I recommend Fowler's 1998 Milton: Paradise Lost (2nd Edition) edition in used paperback ---- reissue in 2006 edition with a new cover and much higher price.The blurb from the publisher on the Pullman webpage misleads the reader by mentioning "This is the first fully-annotated, old-spelling edition ..." It ain't (as the small print says). I can't find the actual book this blurb refers to, there are several that might be the one mentioned. One such version, with very favorable recommendations, is Barbara K. Lewalski's 2007 Paradise Lost that reproduces the original language, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italics of the 1674 text. Its annotations are on the same page. Again, I would again urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."(Incidentally, I was able to find a .pdf copy of it online).Another annotated edition, again with those on the same page, that sticks close to the original 1674 text (but with some minor modernization) is Merritt Y. Hughes' Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics), first published in 1935, and revised in 1962. It is advertised as one popular with college professors for their classes, whatever that may mean. From what I gather, Fowler has replaced Hughes as the scholarly version to use.The edition by Hughes was taken in 2003 by David Scott Kastan (Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics)) and edited more extensively, again with the annotations on the same page. Incidentally, Kastan's comments on how he edited, along with comments on any editor's choices when dealing with Milton, are well worth reading, and can be found under "Textual Introduction" using the "Look Inside" feature. I urge reading them to understand how and why there are so many different editions of Milton.Yet another annotated edition that comes close to the original is by John Leonard's Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics). The ad for this version states that the text has been modernized to the degree of reducing some capitals and italics, and correcting the spelling and some punctuation. It is annotated, but not to the degree of Fowler --- but the notes are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page as seems customary and which I personally find difficult to use because of constantly having to flip between pages. Again, I would urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."There are many other scholarly editions available in addition to the ones I have mentioned here, including one online at the John Milton Reading Room at Dartmouth College.For those who might like a less challenging version of "Paradise Lost", I suggest BookCaps "translation" (Amazon's words, not mine) Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English or at an even less difficult level, Joseph Lanzara's John Milton's Paradise Lost In Plain English: A Simple, Line By Line Paraphrase Of The Complicated Masterpiece. Should those prove too difficult, there might be somewhere a copy by Classics Illustrated comics, although a search by Google turns up nothing --- perhaps they never published one.Since each edition of "Paradise Lost" has its strengths and weaknesses, how does the buyer go about selecting an edition for purchase? To me, it's rather like buying a car --- ultimately based upon personal preference, but in this case, rather than engine and body style, determined by the way the editor has modified Milton's language and added annotations, and their degree of adherence to his original language --- some editors produce as little modernization as possible to retain Milton's original meter and rhythm for reading aloud, while others try for a more modern sound. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature, to see what the editor has done, to help making a decision.Whichever edition you buy, may you find great enjoyment in reading what I consider the greatest epic poem in the English language --- although you might agree more with what Donald Sutherland's character, Jennings, had to say about it in the movie "Animal House": "Now what can we say about Milton's "Paradise Lost"? It's a very long poem. It was written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. ..... Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

I have three editions of Paradise Lost—Alastair Fowler's, Scott Elledge's and David Kastan's—, and this is definitely the most suited for my object and needs. David Kastan undertook a throughout update and revision of Merritt Y. Hughes' praised notes to Paradise Lost, and, although I haven't yet read Hughes' original work, I'm inclined to think that Kastan lives up to his illustrious predecessor. This edition includes a fine introduction to the poem, a glossary of uncanny words found in it, copious notes on historical, mythological and biblical allusions, and commentaries on Milton's style and poetics (they are neither as extensive nor as "scholarly" as Mr. Fowler's notes, but I find them more straightforward and elucidative to the average reader). Truly a work worthy of Milton's epic.

Milton is a genius, but the introduction and commentary on the poem are atrocious. It reminds me of Chesterton's comment about John and Revelation: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators."A far more helpful guide to Paradise Lost is Leland Ryken's volume in his series Christian Guides to the Classics. The detail is not as granular, but it's a far more reliable commentary on the poem itself.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Lost itself, but I want to confine this review to the Kindle edition of the Dover Thrift Editions. The Kindle edition has the text of the poem with straightforward formatting. Line breaks were consistent with what you would expect from print edition. There are no line numbers, but I have yet to see a kindle book with line number in poetry. My biggest complaint is that the footnotes, of which there are many, are not linked into the text, making them practically useless in the Kindle edition. It is difficult to switch back and forth between two locations without links, especially when you are not sure what part of the text will have a footnote. So, 5 stars for Paradise Lost, but just 3 stars for the Kindle edition. I would try and find one with linked footnotes.

The best way to read one of the foundational classics of the Western world is to take a class at a university from a professor who specializes in Milton and baroque English authors. The second best way is to buy an edition like this one and read everything between the covers. Paradise Lost plumbs deeply the Greeks, Romans, the Bible and other religious and secular literature. In addition, it is a commentary on the English monarchy and the storm that overtook it with the execution of Charles I in 1649. Milton played a role in that drama, and it is embedded in Paradise Lost. By the time he started writing, a restoration was afoot, and Milton had to be careful not to indict himself for his enemies, who were looking for an excuse to arrest him. In other words, to simply read only the surface story is to miss almost everything, though the story itself is wonderfully told.I read the Kindle edition. That made it easy to pop from text to notes as they came up, deepening my understanding, but a paper book with a couple of bookmarks would be almost as easy. Paradise Lost is the work of a believer, and if you are a believer not afraid to read outside the Bible, your efforts will be rewarded. If you are a lover of literature, as I am, this is the mother lode!Paradise Lost is written in verse. This version modifies the English for modern readers. Even so, it will be a project. Set goals, stick with it, and you will be rewarded. I came to look forward to my nightly reading. My goal was 100 lines a night. Usually, though, I went over. If you've ever wanted to read one of the big ones, read Paradise Lost. It's not a classic just because bookish scholars like it!

Wouldn't want to document a design without this book.

If you are at all involved with the use of UML in your programming or analysis activities, you'll most likely be interested in seeing the UML Bible by Tom Pender (Wiley). But based on what I have read and studied to date, this book covers everything. Taking the Use Case chapter as an example, I can see that there is an abundance of technical detail and diagramming to explain the topic completely. Couple this chapter with the notation guide in the back, and you have a reference guide that is hard to beat. At the time this book was written, UML 2.0 wasn't yet released. But the author takes the specs that should be part of the final release and explains how those features are different than UML 1.4. As a result, you shouldn't outgrow this book anytime soon.The only quibble I have with the book is the audience that the author says he is targeting. Readers new to object-oriented analysis are expected to be able to get an in-depth understanding of UML and be able to become a productive member of a team by reading this book. In my opinion, that may be a bit of a reach. If I had no UML experience, I'd find this book very daunting in both the size and complexity of the material. My recommendation would be to find an entry level UML book, and work through it before tackling this book. With the UML fundamentals fresh in your mind, you'll be able to come at this book from a much better position and benefit much more quickly.Overall, a good book to have around...

The book is laid out very well, starting with a review of UML and provides thorough and detailed descriptions of all the diagrams and notations. I'm using this nearly exclusively to help me model projects, and is on my desk instead of on my bookshelf.The author clearly understands UML and takes the reader effectively through the distinctions between the many notations.Pluses- Excellent description on the differences between UML 1.4 and 2.0, including completely different chapters where necessary- Detailed descriptions of all the notations including less often used pieces- Explicit definitions of key terms that limit confusion created from the "common understanding" of the definitions- Excellent example that runs through the entire book, with appropriate departures to clarify points.- Valuable introduction to the Object Constraint Language (OCL) and action semantics- Most information that belongs in the appendix / late chapters is there (see below)A few dings -First, I would have to agree with Mr. Duff's comments on the target audience - I'm fairly experienced with Object Oriented programming and with design work, but when I tried to read this, I started getting confused and very sleepy. I started out with UML for Dummies and this made life much easier.Second, the author included an early chapter and 50 pages throughout the book to the architecture and formal definition of UML. Frankly, I'm not sure who is really interested in the definition of the UML 1.4 four layer architecture model and the UML 2.0 superstructure library, but to me the bigger sin is to put it in chapter 2 instead of an appendix / later chapter. I didn't gain anything except a headache by reading about it earlier in the book.Third, although he is very clear about it through the book, the version that I have came out before the final specification. This may cause some things to be different from his version to the final specification. However, he details those specifically, gives the likely outcomes, and the detailed areas are in the hinterlands of UML.

This book is highly recommended because not only is it clearly written, but it is also a comprehensive treatment of the full UML standard, including OCL, XMI and Action Semantics. In addition, an early chapter is devoted to explaining object-oriented concepts, so the UML is put into the right context and not just treated as a notation.Because of the thorough comparisons made between UML 1.4 and UML 2.0, the UML Bible will ease the transition for many modelers to the latest, substantially revised version of the standard.The chapter on OCL is very readable and makes this difficult topic a little easier for most people to appreciate.The chapter on XMI is really just an introduction to the topic, but this chapter does include a very nice introduction to Diagram Interchange, a cool addition to UML 2.0.Other highlights of UML Bible:* Appendices include very usable notation guides, one for UML 1.4 and another for UML 2.0.* A concise glossary that includes diagrams is included at the back.* One major example dominates the book, a Ticketing System.* A companion web site provides useful links and downloads.
