A fanastc gift for storytellers of all disciplines. Judy focuses on “story”, knowing our minds create meaning out of the verisimilitude of life through our stories. She also shares valuable advice on very practical matters, and she respects her “songwriters”, sharing with them her genuine compassion for that challenging but essential role. She helps creative individuals who, often despite or because of their gifts, often need real encouragement, practical advice, or sage wisdom on how to self actualize. A marvelous book that transcends merely the songwriting milieu, and can be appreciated by novelist, screenwriter, and poets alike. Of course, songwriters will find an invaluable resource in this book. I think getting both the book and audiobook was a great idea, as I got the best of both worlds.

Finally got around to reading this book that I bought over a year ago and wish I had read it sooner!This is a much shorter book than I had anticipated (Kindle) but it was extremely effective with every word.It's not a step by step process of "what" to do, although it has that. It's more of a book that helps you refine your "why". Get that super honest and honed and the "what" will take care of itself.I also really appreciated the "must read" references to other books as you navigate the song writing journey mind, body and spirit.

The Songwriter’s Survival Guide by Judy Stakee clearly outlines the methodology she developed during her 30 years in the music industry as a “song plugger.” Her guidance for emerging and veteran songwriters includes the importance of personal development as a means of fueling the creative process and the prerequisite of mastering storytelling for writing lyrics and music, selling yourself and your songs, and developing and maintaining collaborations. Stakee shares a holistic approach to a successful career in the music industry by reminding the reader to care for their body (their instrument), and to integrate good business practices from the start, such as having written agreements for co-writing projects and copywriting lyrics and music. Although the advice in this book is geared to songwriters and song publishers, it can easily be applied to anyone intent on improving their creative process.

I really enjoyed this book. As a songwriter for the majority of my life, there was some information I knew, but there was a good amount that I didn't. I feel like although it is a shorter read than I anticipated, I found a great amount of value in her words. Judy cuts right to the point of what you need to know, rather than providing vague advice, as many other industry professionals have done. I'm glad I bought this book!

Amazing book and audiobook! Judy has very great advice for songwriters of any experience level! I listened to it multiple times while taking notes. Motivates and inspires your to write, while giving you information i've searched for all over the internet. Great job Judy Stakee!
