I purchased this book for my third grade classroom. After reading it, I decided it was worth my instructional time to read it to my students a little bit at a time. My students love the characters and the stories. I love the lessons at the end of each chapter. There is a note to the parents and then discussion questions as well as baby steps to take to put these habits into practice in the child's life. The book is laid out very well as a read with me book for children and adults to share time together learning. The hardback copy comes with a dust jacket, but the cover of the book is fully illustrated, too. It is slightly larger than a sheet of paper. This book would be fantastic in a classroom or in the home. I will be getting more copies to give as gifts to my nieces and nephews.
A great book with seven stories that teach kids independence and good habits to deal with various situations. The stories feature characters who are used throughout to book to deliver specific message. The first story "I'm bored: is a child's explanation of how boredom is a personal choice, kids shouldn't depend on others to entertain them. It encourages initiative and being responsible for your own happiness. The other six stories include having a plan, work comes before play, everyone can win, listen before speaking, together is better, and balance is best. My daughter looked forward to what the gang was up to next and how they would fix it.There are discussion questions at the end of each story. The stories feature repeating characters and seem especially geared to grades 1-4.There's no heavy handed advice or sense of minimizing a kid's concerns in this...self-awareness and making good decisions is the goal. I really enjoy this with my own son. The stories stand up to repeated readings, and each time you go through it you can emphasize a different point without seeming to be lecturing or prying.
I bought this for my 2 grandsons - ages 4 &51/2."Boring, boring, boring" - the first 3 words of the book got their attention. We read the book several times during my visit. Great life lessons. Only gripe- I didn't like the focus on who's "fault" is that. I crossed out that word and rewrote- who's responsibility is that? I think that's a better life lesson.
I bought this to read to my kindergarten students. The stories are great (as an adult) but difficult for the kiddos to follow. Plus there are free YouTube videos with the 7 Habit stories...
Great reading material for you and your child to share. The side notes and tips can help relate for your family's daily life. The book has concepts from the 7 habits of successful people, which helps you and your child take on life with a better future perspective. My five year old daughter jumped right in and had questions for understanding and started implementing the habits the next morning. Although there are a few typos in the relatable section, its nothing you cant catch ahead of time as you read ahead. We've read one story each night, and thought of ways we can improve our outlook and productivity to make the most of tomorrow.
I am a Covey fan, so I was super ex tied when I came across this book. I want to raise my children to be successful and responsible adults. This book is perfect for both my ten and four year old children. Due to their age gap, it is difficult to buy books suitable for the both of them. This one works and so do the valuable lessons that come from it!
I couldn't recommend this book more. I wish I had it years earlier. These 7 steps are so important for everyone to know and teaching them early is the biggest gift you could give your child. My son is 11 and while it's very beneath him on an educational level, it explains it very simply and fundamentally too. He loves this book and I fully plan to purchase teen version in a few years as well. I read this with him and also bought the level 6 workbook to accompany this. Great, great, great purchase. Bought the adult version for myself and it has been life changing!
Having been a fan of Stephen R. Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" since the first publication of the book, I was ecstatic about the publication of this book by son Sean. He addresses the seven habits in short and linked stories. The stories teach the habits to kids at an age when they are still forming values that will become the basis of their actions long into the future. Kids who learn the principles, paradigms, and processes of the habits at a young age will have a running start on becoming happy, productive adults.Sean's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens" adds the details these young people will need to fully understand and apply the principles as they struggle with the challenges and temptations of the teen years.Several years ago I was certified by Covey Leadership (now FranklinCovey) to facilitate the 3-day intensive seminars on the Seven Habits. I conducted over 30 of the seminars at the company I was employed with over a period of two years. These have been some of the most rewarding learning experiences of my life, as each seminar provided me with deeper and deeper insights as participants experienced their own "a-ha's". I remember telling participants, "Wouldn't it be nice if young children could be taught these principles?"Wow! What you hold in your head, you draw into your world!I have purchased "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" for my 6-year-old granddaughter for Christmas this year. Her mom (my first daughter) is a Special Education teacher (and a participant of one of my intensive seminars back in 1996) who can use the book as she influences in a positive way the lives of her disadvantaged and at-risk students. She can help them become the "transitional figures" in their families' lives, breaking the cycle of abuse, hopelessness, and despair that they have been exposed to.Thank you, Sean, for continuing your father's legacy with the publication of these books!
