Warning This is not the complete book! When ordering my books for school this book was the first to pop up on my search and I did not realize it only has 4 chapters in it. When searching the whole book should come up first not the introductory. Still giving 5 stars because everything was fine except for not knowing it was half the book. Just irritating to rent it for $40 and now have to turn around and rent another book for the end chapters for $80.

Loui Lord Nelson, Ph.D., is a consultant specializing in universal design for learning (UDL). She recently completed a 1-year postdoctoral fellowship through Boston College and CAST. She has focused on K–12 professional development and systems change design and is conducting research in both areas. Prior to this experience, she was the Coordinator of UDL in Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation in Columbus, Indiana, for four years. Loui began her career as an eighth-grade collaborative teacher in Indiana and then expanded her work to focus on the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the postsecondary setting and the families of those individuals. Her work is constantly informed by the lifespan experiences of these individuals.David H. Rose is the Founder and Chief Education Officer of CAST.

This book is well-structured with vivid working examples to illustrate every checkpoint. guideline and principle of UDL. For teachers who want to improve their teaching quality, I highly recommend this book to them. After reading this book, teachers would naturally reflect on their own teaching design, since they empathize with Anthony and many other teachers in the book. And because the author has an insight with typical problems in current classroom teaching, and she analyze and suggest under UDL principles; teachers can also decompose their current teaching plan, recalibrate it to meet UDL.However, this book is not particularly for online learning design. Some methods are a little bit obsolete, such as "cloze" mentioned in the guideline "provide options for executive function". Maybe it was because the author is knowledgeable in the field of Special Education, she tend to provide the most practical methods in-classroom teaching. Although UDL is "universal", we still need to look for more examples about how to apply UDL on internet space.

It will be great to include more specific strategies for each part of the guidelines, such as more specific approach to promote engagement, sample activities or lessons. Teaches need to see how the lesson is delivered to make sure there is effective engagement! It would also suggest making connections with DOK levels with lesson goals.

I had to go to their website to see an updated recipe and find out where the lemon juice should be added. Similarly, a recipe for apple jelly didn't call for any pectin? After you boil your apple sauce, how will you end up with jelly and not hot apple juice? I would expect mistakes like this to have been corrected by the 37th edition.

Though it may seem like a "basics" book, this is the standard which all canners should follow. I have done a lot of canning and have many books but when I started doing even more low acid foods (specifically mushrooms), I wanted to have this to be sure of all of the correct instructions and parameters. We alter some receipts slightly because we prefer to use Sure-jell instead of the Ball pectin for jams. With our little experience we have been able to adapt as needed with ease. I love canning. I purchased this because I had lost my older book. I did find the older book after this one came but it's ok. They complement each other. There are newer recipes in the new book. Love it.

My problem with this book is that I was hooked with reading the chapter postings on the author's blog and thus paid no attention to the fact that this is Book 1...in how many?Much of the story follows canon but we are first introduced the the connections between humans and dragons and the treaty which maintains peace between the two species. Then there are humans who hear and can talk to dragons. Elizabeth has inherited the role of Dragon Keeper from her father and thus is also under rule to marry Collins as he will inherit Longbourn and its wyvern dragon, Longbourn.Darcy comes to Hertfordshire mainly due to the fact that his firedrake egg has been stolen and if it hatches without immediately imprinting on a human it will then hunt and kill humans and lead to another war.Much of the story has to do with first the various sub species of dragon and their behaviors and how they communicate with each other and humans. Secondly there is the matter of searching for the egg among households, among caverns, valleys, casks and chests; one such search almost killing off our two principal characters.Darcy and Elizabeth find that although they have to respect the roles each has with their dragon acquaintances they have all the misunderstandings and conflicts we know of from canon. Darcy finds that Elizabeth has learned through instinct and observation much from which the world of dragon-hearers could benefit. While Elizabeth must not only tolerate Darcy and help in his search, she has her future planned for her and can only accept it and get comfort from all the various forms of dragons who have learned to love her and desire to be in her company.I just hate to have to wait to read the next book.

First, I have to,say that ordinarily, I am over the paranormal aspects of fiction, so initially I wavered back and forth, but I finally decided to give this book a chance. I am so glad that I did. Maria Grace has crafted a wonderfully readable and compelling universe where dragons and humans coexist, and peacefully, for the main part. It was a brilliantly crafted story, and so fascinating, that I did little else but read it obsessively for hours. Elizabeth and her father are dragon keepers, or Dragon Friends. They have the ability to hear and interact with dragons, and to care for them. They have a ferocious Wyvern named Longbourn who lives in a cavern on their estate. He is somewhat of a martinet and quite spoiled, demanding a lot of Elizabeth's time and attention. He has decided that she must marry Mister Collins, the estate's heir, because it will keep Elizabeth at Longbourn and forever under his scaly thumb. as in canon, Mister Bennet is Mister Bennet: whatever makes his life easier, he will do, and forcing Elizabeth to fall in with the dragon, Longbourn's plans is all part and parcel of his personality. He can be a loving father unless it interferes with his wants and desires, and then he becomes selfish. What he wants, as usual, is to live his own life without much care for anyone else's. I liked it that Maria has brought out that aspect in his personality, because too often we don't consider him for what he is. He and the dragon, Longbourn, are well suited to,each other, because they are both selfish, demanding and incapable of seeing anyone's viewpoint, but their own. The estate dragons are always named after the estate they live on. There is also a Pemberley dragon and a Rosings dragon, and the dragons are much like their Keeprs. There is a treaty between humans and dragons that also dictates aspects of their interactions, and because of that treaty, the estate dragons can run their Keeper's lives. Longbourn is insisting on Elizabeth marrying Collins, just as Rosings insists on Darcy marrying Anne de Bourgh. And you thought Lady Catherine was the only dragon in P&P.Darcy has a dragon egg that is about to hatch, but it is stolen from him by exactly the one person you would guess! He sets off to find the egg and in the process goes to stay with Bingley at Netherfield. The story pretty much follows canon and also branches off into pure fantasy. This is an exceptionally well crafted story with amazing creatures, whose personalities are just as big as they are. The dragons all have very distinct personalities and their interactions with their Friends and Keepers are just plain fun and fascinating. In this book, Mary and the Gardiners all can hear dragons and interact with them. I loved reading about the Fire dragons, tiny bird like dragons. They reminded me of my conure, who also is smart, funny, a bit manipulative, and who also has a very annoying habit of biting!Elizabeth and Darcy have all their preconceived notions of the other playing out against a background of dragons and a fascinating universe. Each dragon has it's own likes and dislikes, some get along, some don't. They were almost like people - big scaly people, but people all the same. The plotting and writing are excellent, and Austen's familiar words and story are skillfully woven into a big, amazing fantastic tapestry. Like all of Maria's stories there is an interesting premise, familiar and new characters, snappy dialogue, and a healthy does of snark. It was incredibly fun to read.Elizabeth and Mary are designated as Friends, Darcy and Bennet are Keepers. Bennet wants to retire because of infirmity and an overriding interest in scholarship and dragon lore, which means Elizabeth is going to be named Keeper. It is in Bennet's and Longbourn's selfish interests to keep Elizabeth tied down to the estate and the dragon. Changes however are in the air, and long held dragon beliefs are falling away. Dragons are beginning to understand humans better and are realizing that that they need to loosen the reins a bit. It is hinted that the new treaty with the dragons will cede the humans more control of their own lives, with less input, and interference from the dragons. Once the treaty is signed, Mister Bennet and Longbourn can no longer dictate who Elizabeth will marry. So it is in their interests to force her to marry Collins. I kept hoping that he and/or Wickham would be eaten by a dragon, but so far, no such luck. This is the first in a projected series, with the second book set to launch in early 2017. I am completely hooked, and I will buy all of them and take this fantastic journey along with our much loved old and new characters. I honestly can not say enough good things about this book. It is engaging, fascinating, witty and breath taking. Mind. Blown. Even if you aren't into fantasy and sci-fi, give this book a chance. I certainly am not, but Maria made a believe ever of me. A lot of us dislike a story that plays out over several books, but for this to be one book would have made for a huge download. I like that there will be some different stories and adventures, and normally, I would be the first one to complain. This book has given me a lot to think about, and it had some laugh out loud moments. I am glad it has ended for now, because we are getting our house ready to sell and I can't keep stealing away with my Kindle for hours at a time!

They speak in a language only other dragons and certain humans can understand. Those without it are not even aware that dragons exist. (Sort of like Muggles in the Harry Potter universe). It is a closely guarded secret, and there is a Pendragon Treaty, hundreds of years old, that has kept the peace between dragons and humans up to the time this story begins.But now an unhatched major-dragon egg, a firedrake, has been stolen from Pemberley, and Mr. Darcy comes to the area along with his companion cockatrice dragon, Walker, in search of it. If the egg hatches in the wild without a human there to imprint upon it, it will be wild and uncontrollable, threatening the longstanding peaceable relations.In the Bennet family, Mr. Bennet, Mary, and Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner all can recognize and understand dragons, but Elizabeth is particularly gifted. Darcy is amazed at her ability to soothe dragons of every type, but his pride makes him resist working with her to find the egg until circumstances (and their dragons) force the issue.I am impressed with the entire culture that Ms. Grace creates surrounding the dragons, with specific protocols and courtesies, different levels of respect depending upon the type and bearing, and the individual personalities. I love the little details, such as how Elizabeth's fairy dragon, April, nips at Darcy's ear when she's aggravated with him, and how Mr. Bennet's massive wyvern dragon, Longbourn, stretches his neck for her to scratch him and wags his foot like a dog as she does so.The way Ms. Grace incorporates this dragon-related crisis into the familiar Pride and Prejudice is truly amazing. It gives structure to this fully developed stand-alone book while hinting of what's to come in succeeding volumes of this series. Obviously, the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth has yet to heat up, but their interactions are a delight to read. There are lingering mysteries, because Longbourn (the dragon, that is) seems to have secrets he's hiding. And who booby-trapped a trunk in Netherfield with dragon venom? Is there another dragon lurking in the forest near Longbourn? Despite these questions, there's no annoying cliffhanger at the end of this book, which comes to a reasonable conclusion.

My 2-year-old loves this book! It is in-depth enough to engage a much older child, though. Gives an overview of the history of harvesting and the inner workings of combines. It is hard to find factual children's books about farm machinery. This is one of the better ones out there! Can't wait for the companion "Planters and Cultivators" to come out!

This was highly entertaining in parts, and endearing for its personal and honest narration. The writer has a rollicking voice, and keeps the mood light, despite the (sometimes) heavy material. However, there was a lot of story crammed into a very small book. The writer seems determined to recount all details of his life up to the present. I wonder whether the content wouldn't have been better divided into two novellas. All in all, a sweet debut.

First of all... as with almost everything I read, I downloaded this as an ebook from the local library. (I also read a lot of Kindle Unlimited books)While I realize that I am not the author's target audience, I had hoped to like this book more and possibly learn some new techniques for being happy. I did find the story interesting... and I thought the author wrote well... and I enjoyed the humorous parts and felt for him during the stressful times. BUT... I wish he would have called the book 'Looking for Happiness' not 'How to be Happy' since I really didn't learn how to be happy.all in all, it was OK. Not wonderful, not awful. but not what I had hoped for.

The title is kind of misleading, but I still find myself absorbed with the book. Short but intense it is.The author had to deal with depression, family issues (parents with possible mental illnesses and siblings with Asperger) and also his sexuality.I find myself in the author's constant questions about his psychological problems and orientation: these are not things that are within our control and can change in a blink of an eye. 'How to Be Happy: A Memoir of Love, Sex and Teenage Confusion’ is Australian author David Burton’s debut.I read this book ages ago and then didn’t know what to do about how much I loved it. Writing a review was hard, and the words I tried to put down didn’t adequately express how much I loved the book. And then I went to Brisbane Writers Festival, and attended an ‘in conversation’ between David and fellow memoirist, Robert Hoge that just blew me away for how candid and funny he was – that reiterated for me just how special ‘How to be Happy’ truly is … and still, I struggled. So just know that this review will probably end up expressing only a miniscule fraction of my admiration for David and this book of his, which won the 2014 Text Prize for Young Adult and Children’s Writing. Sorry – I tried, but this really is one of those books and authors that I’m just going to end up telling you to read and attend any of his appearances because there’s something special here that you’ve just got to discover for yourself. Anywho.The book opens thus;***I don’t know how to be happy.Yeah, sorry. Awkward.Okay, let me rephrase. I don’t know how to make you happy. But I have a pretty good idea what would help. Trouble is, my tops sound fairly lame. It’s like when you ask someone about the secret to losing weight and then answer ‘eat well and exercise’.True, but profoundly unhelpful.***And right there is how I got totally onboard with this brutally honest and funny memoir – because David’s “endgame” as a memoirist is really to just put the ugly truth down on paper. To put into a book all the things he went through – two brothers with Aspergers, bullied at school, worried about a self-harming friend, his own spirals into depression and anxiety not to mention all the teenager years of sexual confusion and hormonal whirlpools.At one point David remembers his dad giving him a copy of John Marsden’s ‘Secret Men’s Business’, a 1998 non-fiction book for teen boys that touched on everything from leadership responsibilities to masturbation (a revelation for young David Burton at the time – hilariously). But what he especially remembers about this book crossing his path was just his astonishment at somebody writing these things down and sharing them – being candid with teenagers about such topics (remember, Burton is a Millennial and his childhood was a pre-Internet one!). That’s what ‘How to be Happy’ does too – through the “character” of David he explores his own fumbles and foibles in such a charming and self-deprecating way that it’s quite disarming for a reader, but then the moment comes when you do realise that these things being discussed are still somewhat taboo in society (particularly honest discussions around mental health) and there is real bravery in David putting them on the page, sharing his story, stripping himself bare.One aspect in particular is his sexuality. A socially awkward teen who didn’t fit into society’s “machismo” stereotype of a sport-loving, rough-tumbling manly man, David discovered his voice through the self-expression of drama class … and then struggled with what it meant that he was drawn to inherently “feminine” pursuits and activities. He assumed he was gay (a common epithet shouted at him by school bullies too) – and this becomes a fascinating time for current self-reflection, as he does address the narrow gender definitions, which so confused his teenage self (and that still permeate in society today). But David’s lusting after several female classmates does eventually clue him into the fact that he is heterosexual, but now equipped with a unique and accepting view of sexuality and gender fluidity.The other big focus of the book, which is retold so tenderly, is David’s mental health, and that of his family – for his brothers’ unique Asperger view of the world, as well as his family’s history of depression. This is where David reminded me of the late, great YA author Ned Vizzini – who wrote with such biting honesty about depression in his characters (drawn on his own experiences). In ‘It's Kind of a Funny Story’ for instance, which began with the eerily accurate line “Its so hard to talk when you want to kill yourself.” David has similarly in-your-face honesty when writing about his depression and anxiety, that I found to be both moving and vital.I also loved the tender heart of the book, a celebration of the friendships formed and trials overcome – and also for the little things that actually become importantly intrinsic to who you grow up to be. That is, I loved David paying tribute to what he grew up loving – an acknowledgment of the stories, fandom’s and connections he made that have had lasting influence on him (particularly considering he’s had a career in theatre!).***Mary and I discovered Harry Potter together, which, in terms of major life events, is almost as important as YOUR ACTUAL BIRTH. Lunchtimes regularly involved rushing to the library to pore over the latest instalment in Harry’s adventures and attempting to make predictions about upcoming books. We would also discuss Star Wars, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Discworld and Doctor Who at length. We were nerd soulmates.There are few reasons I would ever wish to be a teenager again, but I could be persuaded if it meant rediscovering all of these stories again for the first time and finding my unabashed passion for them.***And finally – I can’t stress this enough – ‘How to be Happy’ is funny. Bitingly, embarrassingly, genuinely – FUNNY. This sort of humour surely only comes when we’re forced to reflect on our teenage selves and suddenly see the joke that was so hard to laugh at, at the time of adolescence. This book is gold, and if I could I’d make it mandatory reading in schools … or, maybe, not in schools but mandatory under-the-covers with a torchlight, late into the night reading for all those teenagers wondering why they feel this way, when will it get better and does anybody understand me? For those teenagers I’d like to gift them ‘How to be Happy’ – because David won’t claim to have all the answers, but he’s been through the trenches and written about it in all his embarrassing teenage glory.

I think that the first thing I should mention in this review is that, being the first memoir I've read, this book was quite different from what I'm used to. Since the events and characters were real, I can't say much about the way the plot unravels or the choices made by the people portrayed. I can, however, share my opinion on the way it was told to us, the readers.First of all, the register in this story is a very conversational one. You feel as though you're sitting across from the author while he's telling you his life story. At the beginning, I enjoyed this casual tone, but around the middle of the book, it felt very fake and for some reason very uncomfortable too. I'm sure this was not only because of the tone, but also because of the content, but I'll get to that in a minute.This book deals with very heavy subjects, among them hereditary depression, stigma surrounding psychological help, self harm, sexuality, and suicide. It sheds some light into the thoughts and feelings that go through a depressed and anxious person, in this case a man, which is an idea that society just seems to ignore. (Yes, men can be mentally ill too. It's not 'girly' or 'weak', it's literally a medical condition.) The main character also comment on how society's beauty standards and the toxic masculinity of porn are the cause of some of his problems, as is the lack of representation of himself in the world. Overall, I think this book gave a true testament to how it feels like to live with mental illness.Notwithstanding, the main character/the author, did a lot of things that weren't to my liking. As I've stated, I don't exactly feel like I have the right to comment on someone's personal choices, but taking in consideration that David decided to put his life on the page for the whole world to see, I guess I can make a few comments.The actions of teenage Dave, as wrong as they might seem, could potentially be forgiven or disregarded as teenage mistakes, depending on your level of tolerance for intolerance. These mistakes include: him bullying someone even when he was bullied himself, believing the stereotypes about gay men, such as loving musicals, dancing, cooking, wearing feather boas and having lisps and limp wrists, and considering having feelings as being 'effeminate'.Nevertheless, the actions of adult Dave, the one writing the book, aren't as easy to overlook. David somehow confesses previous racist thought or actions (which, good for him, we are all works in progress), but not homophobic and biphobic ones. Not only does he state that bisexuality is 'more perverted' than gayness, he also uses the f****t slur a few times, along with its deprecating meaning. Moreover, he seems to think that sexuality depends on moods and that he 'let down' the community for being with a woman. Along the story of Dave figuring out his sexuality, the word 'bisexuality' is used once (not good, see above) and never again mentioned as one might expect, if not from the thought of young Dave, from the author looking back at his life and his identity. All of this bothered me and prevented me from connecting to the character/author.As for my reading experience, it was not the best. I felt like the structure of the book needed some work, as the ideas and memories shown were from different timelines (and it didn't seem to be done deliberately, so the reader would be confused on purpose, thus my dislike of it). The story itself was able to hold my interest at the beginning, but unfortunately it didn't last for long.I could not relate to David in high school, battling his anxiety and depression, probably because that section of the story seemed to be more focused on his actions than on what he was feeling. Maybe I'm wrong, but it did feel that way to me, like an indistinguishable jumble of 'just stop for a minute, please.'The part when he was attending university was a little better. The ending, however, was very pleasant, the narrative felt genuine and grounded, even if at times it seemed like there had been a sudden recovery. I wouldn't have opposed to seeing a bit more of the fight to regain control of one's life.I believe it must have taken a lot of courage for the author to open up and let people 'pry' into his brain at his darkest hour and for that I think he deserved some recognition.
