About the Author

Multiple award-winning author Jon Scieszka grew up in Flint, Michigan, the second oldest and the nicest of six boys. Jon went to school at Culver Military Academy in Indiana where he was a Lieutenant; Albion College in Michigan where he studied to be a doctor; and Columbia University in New York, where he received an M.F.A. in fiction. He taught elementary school in New York for ten years in a variety of positions. He is the author of many books for children including the New York Times Best Illustrated Book The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales (illustrated by Lane Smith), the Caldecott Honor book The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (illustrated by Lane Smith), and Math Curse (illustrated by Lane Smith).  In addition to his work as an author, Jon also runs a web-based literacy program called “Guys Read” that is designed to encourage boys, particularly reluctant readers, to get involved with books. In 2008, Jon was named the country’s first National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, a joint effort of the Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council. I had to read this for college and I am not a guy. But each part by a different author keeps the book flowing and feeling like a quick read. I would really recommend this for someone trying to help a young man get interested in reading written by a bunch of men who know how they feel.

Guys Write for Guys Read is a collection of short essays, drawings and more from some of our best male authors.The book describes what it's like to grow up "a boy" and is often funny and irreverent but poignant and spot on.I'm using it as a reader for my class, composed entirely of boys, and I have never seen them so excited aboutreading and discussing the themes of a book.I've enjoyed the book immensely myself--proof you don't have to be a "guy" to appreciate this collection.

Something for every type of guy. Also something for the guy's female friends and relatives.I must admit that I didn't understand the constant need to define throw up that my own son developed; it just seemed strange that he could catalog so many different words meaning barf or hurl or.. whatever. Now, after reading "Guys Write..." I'm doing much better.I suggest that all teachers, moms, aunts, grannies, and librarians should read "Guys Write..." because guys who like to read also like to do other interesting guy stuff which might be different from what we would like for them to be doing. It helps to remember to laugh at the funny parts of life.A great big Thank You to the folks who brought us Guys Write for Guys Read.

I purchased this on a whim for my son's 13th birthday after receiving an Amazon recommendation. My son does not read voluntarily unless you count video game cheat sheets and Garfield cartoon books. The book arrived yesterday. I grabbed it along with the day's mail and headed out to pick up my son at school. I started reading the book in the middle, with Gary Paulsen's electric fence adventure, to amuse myself in a very slow carline. I was hooked and began racing through the selections picking out the authors of the stories our family has enjoyed over the years sometimes laughing out loud, othertimes recognizing all too well the growing pains of adolescence. My son finally arrived. I relenquished the book to him and asked him to indulge me and read the Paulsen story outloud. He did and was hooked as well. He read several selections to me outloud then took the book to bed with him, had it with him through breaksfast, and carried it to school as it is the last days of the school year so he will have extra time to read it. This from a boy who has never read anything over 100 pages in his life.I will wait patiently for my chance to finish the book and will encourage Dan to write his own review but wanted to share the fun this book had brought us. I can see that we will be sharing this with Dad, Grandfather, and my young adult son and that this will be a college graduation gift for my daughter's boyfriend. What a great summer reading book for the whole family.

Being an avid fan of Jon Scieszka over the years, I was certain this book would be a hit. This one wasn't as popular with them as other stories from the series of books. The idea of sharing stories from boyhood is great, and for my 5th graders, the more pain and embarrassment shared by the author, the better.

I read one story to my students , "Beer, Barf, and Bonding," and they LOVED it. Most stories are good, though I ripped out a few that I felt were "shady" for young students.

Mari Kondo's first book covered her method pretty thoroughly, so I wasn't sure whether this one would be worth the purchase. If you aren't sure which to buy first, I would say the first book does a better job of explaining her attitude towards tidying and this book has better practical advice.In a nutshell, the konmari method involves getting rid of anything in your life that doesn't spark joy. Starting with clothes, you go through each item and decide what stays or goes based on whether or not it sparks joy when you hold it. Joy is the only criterion: 'If it makes you happy, then the right choice is to keep it confidently, regardless of what anyone else says.'The illustrations are charming, but there aren't very many of them. The most helpful shows her famous folding method, which is something I didn't understand simply from reading the first book. (Youtube videos helped.) This book has around 10 diagrams for folding dresses, shirts, odd-shaped clothes, camisoles, parkas, etc. Apart from the folding instructions, the other images are simply cute images of rabbits putting things away, a perfectly tidied closet, etc.One of the criticisms of the first book is that it seems geared mostly towards people cleaning up their own mess, and that hasn't changed. For example, the section on handling stuffed animals is talking about your own plushies, not your children's. I wish there were more discussion of handling items belonging to family members and how to inspire them to tidy up too. Family is covered in one small section, and the main advice is simply to set a good example and accept others – easier said than done!Overall this is a fun read but not substantially different from the first book. This book has more explanation of the original advice, but if you understood it the first time around, you may not need it. There is a lot of repetition between the two books. However, it's an enjoyable read and may give you that last bit of motivation to tidy up once and for all. In addition to the extra folding help, it has more specific advice about handling certain types of items such as greeting cards, dishes, photos, etc.

I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up when it was released in late 2014. I found Marie Kondo's book both useful and charming. I am a somewhat sloppy person. Neither am I a hoarder, however. I found Ms. Kondo's advice useful in tidying up both my bedroom closets and kitchen. I was able to toss a number of clothing items which I had kept from a sense of guilt instead of joy. Similarly, I was able to let go of a number of kitchen appliances to which I had sentimental attachments but no use. Ms. Kondo's childish suggestion to thank my things before letting go was oddly touching and helpful with regard to certain items. I photographed a number of items before releasing them to GoodWill; this gave me an opportunity to acknowledge the memories they generated without retaining the objects themselves (which included a 40 year old blender, some old and hole-ridden t-shirts, and a coffee press which I have not used in over ten years). Ms. Kondo touches on a few of these elements in the introduction of her book as well.Ms. Kondo's new book, Spark Joy, contains further instructions. For example, she provides detailed diagrams explaining how to fold certain clothing items. These are things I wish I would have had when I read the original book. I also enjoyed pictures of organized spaces. There is something attractive about the spartan simplicity of these arrangements, even if they are not for everyone. In the introduction Ms. Kondo highlights that it is good that this book has come later and serves the purpose for aiding those who are in mid-process, whereas those who are just starting may feel overwhelmed. I understand the rationale for not including as many diagrams in the first book, but, I do wish I had it when I was more invested in the process.In the Kindle version of the book, which I got, the first 900 locations (single page showing) is mostly verbal and revisits many of the aspects from her first book. Following this information, there is a “encyclopedia” section that has a large number of diagrams that are very easy to follow; especially with multiple folding techniques for clothing. There are additional paragraphs about specific items, with some pictures, but then the diagrams become less frequent. The abridged information on each section is useful though, and as Ms. Kondo references in her introduction, one can simply turn to the specific area and see what information Ms. Kondo provides for that specific section.There is also a very lovely section on working with others with regards to them being tidy. Ms. Kondo does a good job of helping an individual understand what they can do to help themselves, but still love others who may not have the same draw to being tidy. There is also, within this particular section, a conversation about working children into the process of learning how to fold, which will help them be tidy as well.Must you accept every one of Ms. Kondo's recommendations? I do not think so. For example, Ms. Kondo recommends eliminating extra books. But I am not about to whittle my book collection down to thirty volumes. I find myself going back to certain books again and again, or referring to something I had read years before. But I can still cull out certain books. Nor am I going to rid myself of my file cabinet and all its contents. But I do not need to maintain monthly copies of my cable and water bills, nor do I need to maintain handouts from old seminars. However, a year after reading her original book, I still find myself meditating while I fold clothes and tidy up my drawers, which is truly a bit of life-changing magic.This particular book is a nice addition, giving further insight, reminders, and guidance on the process of creating joy while organizing.

Mostly a rehash of the other "Distraction" books. Just buy one - we like "Delivered from Distraction" the best. Pair this one with "You mean I'm not Lazy, stupid or crazy?" and you'll be in good shape. For heaven's sake avoid "Adult ADHD: How to Succeed as a Hunter in a Farmer’s World." That book is useless. The "Delivered from..." and "You mean..." books are full of practical advice and move quickly past the idea that ADHD people are miraculous etc. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but ADHD doesn't make you miraculous as claimed in the "How to succeed as a hunter..." book, which is utter nonsense.

Do not buy the "updated and revised version" — buy the cheaper version from 1994 (if you want this book). I was shocked to find that aside from the 8-page introduction, next to nothing has been changed from the 1994 version.Despite calling the disorder ADHD in the intro, he calls it ADD throughout the rest of the book. Despite saying that ADHD affects men and women in equal numbers in the intro, soon after in the book he says that it affects men three times more than women. The research he describes is largely from the early nineties or before, despite the explosion of new ADHD research findings in the past 22 years (although there is updated medication information).This makes me angry because the author's grab for money in releasing an "updated" version of a book about a disorder that is hardly updated at all is unacceptable and negligent. Clinicians and patients will read this inaccurate/unupdated information and not deliver or receive the best treatment they could potentially have. Dr. Hallowell stresses in his book how dramatically the disorder can negatively affect one's life and how important treatment is — yet he presents vastly outdated information and pretends it's new, doing a great disservice to ADHD sufferers like myself who want to heal.

If you or someone you love has ADD or ADHD this book is a must have. Written in case file style, it will provide valuable insight to what makes you tick. It was an eye opener for me personally, and my son. I went from "what is wrong with me?" to "oh, so that's why...I'm supposed to be this way." This allowed me to form structures in my life to manage my ADD, and even exploit some of the classic ADD traits as assets (such as gaining control of the ability to hyper focus for problem solving, instead of it controlling me). I’m so glad my doctor recommended me this book! I’ve been suffering from ADHD since I was a kid and this book has really helped me through my college years. Growing up I didn’t have much support and barely passed my classes. I didn’t know how to help myself. When I got to college I finally got real help and after my doctor recommended this book to me I couldn’t help but tear up a little whenever I read something that 100% described me. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is suffering from ADHD.

Growing up in a Christian, Regular-Church-Attending Culture, different psychological challenges like Attention Deficit Disorder or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, have tended to all fall into one category: The category of excuses. For many in this culture, the attempt to label and understand these issues looks like an excuse for bad behavior. They might say that hyperactive kids or distracted kids are just in need of stricter discipline. According to some, they haven't been properly trained, and when these kids get into high school, they are told that they just need to try harder. Some people on this side of the fence can even go as far as to say that, "...well, everyone has attention deficit disorder! Your challenges are no different than mine, you just need to buckle down like I have."Besides the fact that an opinion like that is just arrogant... in the words of Dr. Hallowell, "Telling someone who has A.D.D. to try harder is like telling someone who is nearsighted to squint harder. It misses the biological point."This book helped drive that point home for me.Please understand though, I did not read this book simply as a person trying to understand Attention Deficit Disorder in order to help others, students for example, but I read this book as one who has struggled my entire life with A.D.D. Really... I have been diagnosed as an adult by a physician with this condition. For me, this book was personal.Previously to reading this book, I have explored this topic from the Biblical Perspective point of view on more than one occasion. I have heard the arguments and the considered the treatments from the Biblical Counseling (National Association of Nouthetic Counselors) Training that I have received, but I had never really attempted to listen to the other side. Through this book, I have found that the other side has quite a bit to say, and what they are saying is not, "take this magical pill and you will be all better!"Sure, medication is discussed in this book, but it is definitely not the centerpiece. The core of treatment is through learning strategies and getting a better foundational knowledge of the challenges that go along with this disorder. There is also a personal aspect that is encouraged. The treatment includes people and relationships, whether it be "coaches" or "groups" or just the people in your life, there is a human side to the treatment. Near the end of the book he goes into detail on several different structural strategies that have proven to be helpful to those with A.D.D., but even in these strategies, that personal aspect is emphasized.Most of the book teaches through the use of case studies. The names have been changed, but the situations are real. This makes it possible for the author to deal with all of the different ways that A.D.D. manifests itself, whether in children just learning to deal with it or in adults that have spent a lifetime trying to cope. It discusses people with the Hyperactivity element (A.D.H.D.) and people (like me) without the hyperactivity element (A.D.D.).What I found most intriguing in this book was the discussions dealing with all of the secondary issues that so often go hand-in-hand with A.D.D. Issues like depression, anger, abuse and self-medication that are a secondary consequence of the A.D.D. Many of these secondary issues are a result, not of the A.D.D. itself, but from years of believing that the reason you aren't a better person is because you aren't trying hard enough. Those of us with A.D.D. have believed that if we could just get an ounce of the will power that others have, we wouldn't be losing our keys or forgetting important dates. If we actually loved the people that we were talking to, we wouldn't be distracted by what is out the window. If we were just better people, we wouldn't take 10 years and 5 schools and 4 majors to graduate with one 4-year degree. Hearing this inner commentary on your life... for your whole life... can drastically alter your perception of yourself.Whether you are dealing with A.D.D. yourself or with someone you know and love, and if you are looking for a book that does an excellent job in outlining the reality, diagnosis, and treatment of A.D.D. from a current educated, psychological viewpoint, then this is the book for you. If you are looking for a book that balances this perspective with an accurate Biblical understanding of this topic, then you will need to look elsewhere. I have yet to find a book that balances these two realities. I could always give you my perspective, as someone who is attempting to bring these two viewpoints together into a more accurate understanding of what is actually going on in one who has A.D.D., but I haven't written a book yet, and to be honest, I will probably never get around to it anyway. It was challenging enough just to write this book review!

Don’t get me wrong, there is still sex in this book, but it didn’t necessarily distract me from the plot and the meaning of the book.Jemistry Daniels is your stereotypical angry, bitter black woman. She’s been abused in every way possible and she has sworn off giving her heart to men. She bumps into Dr. Tevin Harris after spewing a venomous poem about that very topic. When Dr. Harris makes a move on Jemistry, she makes sure he knows that she is bitter and is sure that he is like all rest. The only thing is, Tevin is not like all the rest. He’s almost too good to be true.There is a lot of drama in this book; Jemistry’s past horror with men and Tevin’s former marriage demons. Throw in Floyd, Tevin’s cheating friend and Jemistry’s best friend, Winsome, who is confused about her sexuality.This book is a little toned down from other books from the author, and you really do want to see what becomes of Tevin and Jemistry and all the other crazy characters in the book.

Zane has done it again! This book is indeed a page turner! Once I read the first page, I was hooked. I could not put my kindle down! It was great reading a book about a determined, professional, sensitive, brother, who consistently displayed his deep respect and love for his woman. I loved the fact that Tevin, never gave up on Jemistry. This guy was never afraid of what others thought of his sensitive side. I enjoyed the open communication between them. Neither one of them was looking for love when they met.I would highly recommend this book!!!!

As For Jemistry Former Roommate She Needed Help And Im Glad She Got It And Her And Jemistry Can Be Friends Again But Keep Her At A Distance. i Was Suprised Jemistry Opened Her Door To The Ex Wife But They Handled That Well Wish More People Now Can Do That. As For The Other Couple Tevin Bestfriend and soon to be ex wife i didnt like him very much but im glad that jemistry said something it was about time. Great Book

This was a great book. Gave different views on different kinds of relationships. Some of the things we do in the dark eventually catch up with us as we seen with Floyd. He had a great woman and figured he could do whatever he wanted. Was so good to see 2 good people like Jemistry and Tevin find real love in other since they had been through so much. Even Winsome found someone and ended up getting counseling for her issues. Well written book. 5 stars for sure.

This was a good read. Winsome character was a little unbelievable for me; but I do believe love can heal. Tevin is a man most women say they want, but to not appreciate him or recognize him when he is in front of them. Lol Tevin was almost perfect; most do not come in the package with all those traits in 1 package. This definitely is for good conversations. We read it as part of our book club, can't wait to discuss.

I am a fan of Zane but this book read to me like it was written by a college student with no real concept of the dimension of people. I found the dialogue very unbelievable for older highly educated professionals and so I couldn't really get into the characters. I would not recommend.

This book has reinforced my hope, my faith that there is a true love out there for me. It was definitely an eye opener on many topics. One being why some think the way that they do and why some feel their ridiculous actions are justifiable. I'd recommend this book to anyone that has given up on love; to anyone that are stuck in a "generational curse" of believing dysfunctional, disrespectful and/or abusive relationships are "normal;" to anyone who enjoys a unique love story as much as I do. I gave it 5 stars because it is a well-written story with a message. It's more than erotica, it makes you think while being entertained. Loved it!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book. I started reading it on a Sunday and was finished with it on Friday. I didnt want to put it down at all but i had to do adult stuff during the week lol. GREAT read

I have bought this multiple times so I can give away to non believers and believers alike. It is a great way to introduce those who have ears to hear and eyes to see and especially those who haven't had their hearts hardened to the Gospel.Even though I prefer the NKJV and the KJV translations of the Word, this particular translation is simplified enough so that the average person can easily understand it. The artwork is great and the Gospel message it conveys is true to the Word and has not been compromised.I couldn't put this thing down the first time I bought it. Ever since I became born again, I gave up much of my anime and manga life because much of it has too much of the antichrist spirit in its ideologies and world views. This was a welcome surprise in Christian literature. Do yourself and someone you know a favor, buy this for yourself then give it to where the Holy Spirit wants you to give it.

Bravo to all those involved in this!My girlfriend is extremely smart, but suffers from dyslexia.She would struggle to read the Bible, even bough she liked it, it was still hard for her.I went searching and found this. I wasn't sure at first, so I bought it for my kindle so I couldInvestigate before I got her a paperback.This was so well done, some of the verses in this spoke directly to me, and even choked me up at times.I finished it very quickly, and learned new things in the process.She loves her Manga Messiah so much, that I just ordered 3 more of the series for her.This is the real deal, with scripture attached, nothing misleading or phony in these pages.Highly recommend for younger people, people with reading disorders, or maybe even people who don't speak English as a first language.I can't speak highly enough about the labor of love this book is.

Main thing wish they would have printed right to left. But for the less trivial. Some of the events are a little off from original context in every sense and diolouge in some instances can be very cheese. I absolutely LOVE what they did with this. They give you a scripture reference page by page to match up with what's going on. I'm only about a third of the book in but it deff seems to emphasize the true point of the gospel as Christ as the only way and a God of sheer love. It does seem targeted to a younger audience at times but I still find it enjoyable, but in other places it shines such as adding life to people and relationship in a way that would have been overlooked, such as Mary and Joeseph, they actual seem like a couple who really love each other and that's something I've personally never thought about, it brings more realism into everything in some ways due to that. If something changes I'll fix my review but I do say this was a job well doe and enjoyable whether new to the message of Christ or well versed. Oh also I like that they use Yeshua and Yoseph and Maryiam as their names it gives it a little more of a manga feel haha

Manga Mutiny, the book of this series that covers Genesis, was much nicer to look at. The necks in this volume are often weirdly thick and some of the faces look derpy too. I wish the quality of the art had remained consistent across volumes. In terms of biblical accuracy, this is alright. It comes with scripture references for what's happening on each page.

I bought this book for my 9-year-old daughter since I am trying to find different ways to encourage her to learn more about the Bible. She loves this book. I haven't had a chance to read it myself to know the content, but I am just glad she is excited to read it. She also doesn't seem to be enthusiastic about reading in general so I feel like this is a huge win.

A wonderful and accurate retelling of the Gospel that both adults and children can appreciate. A problem people might run into while reading this is many of the names in the story are in the original Hebrew. Jesus' name is Yeshua, Mary is Miryam, etc. I believe looking past these changes is well worth it. I read a review about how this book is anti-Semitic and upon reading it I cannot find any logical basis for believing this is an anti-Jew comic and it certainly does not promote hatred. This would make a good present for children and can show them the story of Jesus in a way that they may not have seen before or maybe even their parents haven't seen before. And on the bottom of every page it gives the book names, chapters and verses of where you can find that story in the Bible. This book has shed a lot of light for me and answered a lot of questions that I've had about Jesus and can honestly say that it has improved and deepened my relationship with Christ.

very GOOD! It takes liberties but nothing aggregious or detrimental to the Gospel, and: SCRIPTURAL CITATIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF EVERY PAGE! It's not just a comic devoid of Scripture. It's there, encouraging readers to read the source material for themselves.VERY FAITHFUL too. I'm surprised at the quality of something which you'd think would be blasphemous! It's actually very heartfelt and wonderful, very cute and yet unashamedly Gospel. Nicely done and great for younger audiences (or those of us who wish Sunday School outreach lasted forever).
