From the Author
Dear Readers,I'm so happy Surrender is available once again, both as an ebook and in print. It's been an epic journey with this story, one that almost saw a premature end to the MacKinnon's Rangers series. When I originally wrote it, I had to keep a specific maximum word count in mind. That meant cutting some scenes I loved and shortening others. The result was a book that was a RITA finalist (2007). Still, there were those missing scenes...Eventually, I left the book's original publisher, and both Surrender and the sequel, Untamed, went out of print. I thought that was the end of the series. It was a huge disappointment for me because I love this period of history so very much. Pre-Revolutionary Colonial American history, specifically the period of the French and Indian War or Seven Years War, fascinates me. The mix of cultures, the vastness of the wilderness, the desperate struggle to survive -- these create a vivid backdrop for fiction. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Iain, Morgan, Connor and the Rangers. Fortunately, Berkley stepped in and bought the entire series, which meant I got a second chance at both Surrender and Untamed. Both have new (historically accurate!) covers. Both have fresh edits. And both have new scenes and extended scenes. So not only is the series back, but it's been restored. I am so happy to share it with you!For those of you who've written to me asking, "Is Connor ever going to get his book?" I can finally answer, "Yes!" Watch for Defiant in July 2012.And thanks for your support! Your devotion to this series helped to keep it alive.Yours,Pamela Clare

I found the story believable with well rounded characters. This is not a book where you can figure out what is going to happen with the exception of the HEA. The flaws the characters have make them more believable and story so much better than if everything that happened was clean and honorable. This takes place during a war and Ms. Clare sets the story in a war and we know wars are not pretty nor are heroes crystal clean. The love is here not just between the main characters but also between the men fighting together. The romance is hot, but it is part of the story and not just thrown in as yet another sex scene ( as so many writers tend to do). I can't believe these books have not been found by more readers or found their way to the movie screen.
4.25 starsI had a lot of trouble deciding how many stars to give this book. I think my biggest problem is that I had certain expectations when I started it, and things didn't unfold as I expected. For some reason, the reviews I read lead me to believe that the hero, Iain, was going to be very tender in his treatment of Annie. Those reviews also made me think this would be an all-out 5 star read for me. Despite my original expectations not being met, I still ended up enjoying this book immensely. Here is a good summary of what i liked and what i didn't like:What I liked:-Iain was a warrior to outdo any and all warriors IMO. That man had the powers of a superhero. He carried Annie on his back for DAYS. He could take on anyone, anywhere. His ability to withstand pain and torment was almost inhuman. He was an amazing leader and deservedly won the loyalty and love of his men, MacKinnon's Rangers. He was gorgeously masculine, brave, noble, honorable.--Annie. I loved her character. She was a fighter and a survivor. She was tender-hearted, kind, devoted, intelligent and sweet. She fought for people she cared about despite the fact that she had no power (as women didn't in Colonial days, whether they lived in england or America).--the non-stop action. There was never a dull moment in this book. It seemed like every 50 pages, either the hero or heroine found themselves in life or death situations. Yeah. It was over the top, but I loved it! :-)--The epilogue. Oh my, did I love this epilogue. There was a scene that was so incredibly touching and powerful, it brought tears to my eyes. Even thinking about it now, 24 hours after finishing this book, my chest constricts. What I didn't like:--Although Iain saved Annie's life multiple times, and although he was extremely protective of her, I felt like he treated her poorly several times...and I didn't like it. He was driven by sexual frustration many times and he seemed a little too prone to anger when it came to Annie. Don't get me wrong though: once certain issues were resolved
I was looking for something similar to Outlander when I came across this series. While nothing can ever compare to the Outlander series and the Jaime and Claire love story, I found this series, of the MacKinnons Rangers, very well written and the characters well thought out. It is based on 3 Scottish brothers exiled to the Americas in the 1700's. These are great love stories about all 3 brothers, interspersed with steamy romance scenes and vast perils. Kudos to the author for developing the characters so well, in half the pages, as compared to the Outlander series. While this series is not as fulfilling to me as the Outlander series - I had a hard time putting any of these books down and was drawn into these characters lives and the struggles they had trying to forge a life in a new world. The fact they are Highland Scots was a real bonus. It was like a pain pill for my Outlander withdrawals, and while it didnt completely numb the pain, it certainly repressed it for a bit. For anyone trying to find an Outlander alternative - I highly recommend this series.
This book was ok. It kept me entertained enough to finish it but I was not overly impressed. The characters were flat and shallow. The heroine stuttered in fear every other word for the first half of the book while at the same time she was praised for being courageous and spirited. There were too many inconsistencies with the characters to make them believable and I wasn’t able to really get into the book. Not much emotion for this one. If you want a really great series try Outlander by Diana Gabaldon or even the Scotland Trilogy by Marsha Canham. Both were far more enjoyable and had me totally invested in the stories. I won’t be seeking out anything else from Pamela Clare...sorry.
