We have only been trying this for 2 days so far with our 8 month old, but so far it has worked AMAZING. We had already been doing sleep training (extinction) for the last week and it was going ok but not amazing. We felt like our baby wasn't self-soothing well because she was overtired as her naps during the day weren't sufficient. She was taking about three 30 minute naps per day. Once we started following the NAPS program/90 minute cycles she slept TWO HOURS for her first nap. Then we put her down for the night 4.5 hours after she woke up from her last nap, she slept for OVER TWELVE HOURS (waking once after 9 to nurse, and then promptly falling back asleep). She is also now going down without a fight, and when we were doing naps every 2 hours as recommended by other experts, she would arch her back and cry when we tried to lay her in her crib. This morning and all day today she woke up happy and not crying, which has been the norm lately. I have to say there's something to this science/90 minute thing! Now we just have to sleep train grandma and grandpa for when they start watching her in the fall when my teacher husband goes back to school...
This worked well for us. Our son was struggling to sleep in his crib after co-sleeping until he was 6 months old. The transition was difficult and we were at a loss on how to get him to sleep in his crib and not wake up ten times a night; possibly an exaggeration but it felt like ten times. Even if we could get him to sleep and place him in his crib he would wake in the middle of the night several times wanting to be rocked back to sleep. We used the principals in the book to teach him to self soothe to sleep; we went with the longer version as the shorter 'cry it out' method did not work on our little guy. It was amazing to have him sleeping in his crib within a week without waking at night. We haven't had as much luck with daytime naps but the same principals do help once they learn to fall asleep on their own.If you have a baby on the way or a baby that won't sleep in their crib, BUY THE BOOK. Worth every penny for your sanity.
This book was extremely helpful in getting my 2 month old baby to sleep. I was struggling to get her to sleep naps and to go to sleep early at night, so she was sleeping 10 hours daily, way under the recommended sleeping hour for her. Polly More, a neuroscientist who researches sleep in adults, realized that babies's sleep patterns are similar to adults and teach parents to sleep babies 90 minutes after their awake time. By following her method, I got my baby to sleep 14 hours daily.
My baby has slept 10-12 hours/night since about 2-3 months old. His daily schedule has predictability and therefore, I have sanity. We still hit some hiccups sometimes, but this method helps you understand how to best encourage sleep in your child. Highly recommend for stay at home moms or for babies who have a dedicated caretaker. This method will be difficult to practice if your child is in a daycare facility that cannot tailor their schedule to your baby.
I love this book! Our kids are 4 and 8 now and have always been amazing sleepers (once past the breastfeeding wakings). I am a pediatric Nurse practitioner and recommend this book to all my new parents or those struggling with sleep with little ones. I give it to everyone as a baby shower gift. It's an easy read that you can take in age-stages. You don't have to read cover to cover. I did prefer the old spiral version, but the NAPS solution is just so great and easy!
You can find anything in this book online in forums of people talking about this book. I tried this consistently for over a week without success...feel like I wasted $ on this book. Oh well, lesson learned. Not every baby can be trained to take naps like this...also, if you do this program you are tied down to your house ALL DAY LONG.
This is the best book ever, I give it to all my friends who have babies and they thank me profusely. I’m a professional nanny and I thank the stars when I found this book. It works! It’s so simple, but you can throw away every other book about baby sleep and just get this one! Happy baby, happy parents.
Ever since we tried the 90 minutes rule on day naps. Life has been much more predictable and baby is easier to rock to sleep. He is usually out within 5-10 minutes of rocking or walking. No more cranky baby for nap time and also he does better for sleeping at night too. Just wish this book is more helpful on how to train baby to sleep alone in crib though. It doesn't solve the problem with baby only sleep on me.
