A short introduction to Sumerian civilization, though I wouldn't particularly qualify it as "captivating," at least not in terms of the writing. It was certainly interesting to notice the parallels with our own times and realize how advanced Sumer was for their time (ca 5000 BC). As the author states, Sumer was a civilization of firsts as far as archaeology and history are concerned, creating many tools that we use today in agriculture, inventing the wheel, even introducing a calendar based on the lunar cycle, with 12 months making up a year (they added an extra month every four years to account for the solar year). They had schools, created laws (which probably inspired Hammurabi's since he eventually conquered them), were fairly egalitarian (more so than other civilizations that succeeded them), and their mythology might've even inspired some of the Old Testament.Through reading alone it's apparent there's a wealth of information on Sumerians and the author expressly acknowledges this, arguing this book is but a summary. Personally, having just read Eric Cline's "1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed," I was a bit taken aback by the absence of references or citations to other archaeologists' or historians' works, what made me ponder sometimes what the evidence was for this or that assertion. Having said that, Asimov's "The Near East" is very similar in terms of its writing style and I liked it all the same.I'd say this book probably works as a crash course into ancient Sumer, so do not expect a very detailed analysis of their civilization (impossible with only 135 pages). It has certainly persuaded me to get Samuel Noah Kramer's "Sumerian Mythology" and to look into further books in the Captivating History series.

A general overview giving this authors opinion of the Sumerians. You need to read into the book to find out who actually wrote it. Very weak on details and follows the generally accepted mainstream theories on the civilization. I find it troubling that the book has one chapter on negative comments for Stichin and von DÃ¤niken. While I am not a huge follower of those scholars one should take into account their research and findings. If you read this book you might have a better knowledge of Sumerian civilization but nothing you could not find on a blog elsewhere. Not worth the money, if I could send back I would.

A short book summarizing Sumer and its story as told by archaeological remains. The Sumerians created the first civilization, and we still use tools, mathematics, etc., created by them. Their influence directly affected Mesopotamia even as they were conquered by others.

I read the "Sumerians" and liked it very much. In page 123/123, at 75%, and location 1241/1691 the author makes the Akkadians the descendants of Elamites.Elamites were in southwest Iran, they were not Semites. The Semites came from Syria, and Akkadians were Semites. Now, my research shows that those Akkadians that moved north of Mesopotamia and founded Ashur, became known as Assyrians, and, again, the Akkadians that remained in the south of Mesopotamia, after Hammurabi, became known as Babylonians (See my book "Ancient and Modern Assyrians, a Scientific Analysis").In the Babylonian Chronicles, the Babylonians refer to themselves as Akkad.See Grayson's "Assyrian and Babylonian Chronicles."

I loved this little book. As a fan of history and ancient civilizations I found this to be a great introduction to Sumarian civilization. It is also a good resourceful reference. Easy to read and very accessible, very well researched and full of interesting facts and pictures. Thanks Matt..

The book is a brief introduction to Samaria. It reads more like an outline without much detail. If your looking for a minimal introduction this is the book.

Not as in-depth as I anticipated, but it was a nice little overview of the oldest civilization! I would recommend it to anyone who knows absolutely nothing about ancient Sumeria.

This book is shocking, discouraging, sad to the point of being tragic, and everybody should read it. The main point is that cheap sex--and by cheap sex, Professor Regnerus means not just the fact that many people readily jump into bed with each other (often with the assistance of technology like Tinder) when they are barely acquainted, but also that porn frequently replaces even this level of human contact--has destroyed romance and wooing and is quickly replacing marriage in our country. Because sex is so readily available, people have lost the script that led them to marriage, family and permanence.Men and women are not the same with regard to sex. This has proven to be true in study after study, much as contemporary ideas about equality want to deny it. In general, men have more desire for sex than women. Women desire sex too, but they also want it with love, attention, care and, if they are smart, permanence. Women are the gatekeepers of sex, and even if they don't want to give it away cheaply, men now expect it and can go elsewhere if a woman does not put out. In other words, if women want male attention, they have to give sex away cheaply because other women do and men won't hang around if they don't. It's a vicious circle which leads to untold numbers of young people who have failed relationship after failed relationship--called confluent love in the book--that never lead to the kind of permanence that both men and women want, but that has been destroyed by ready access to sex and porn. The age at marriage rises higher and higher, the number of people who will marry in their lifetime (though most want to marry) shrinks lower and lower, and people don't understand what is wrong, It's a horrible situation for women and children especially, but for men too because they too are happier when they are married and faithful.I'm 61 and have been happily married for 41 years. Even though sex was becoming cheap when we met and courted, in our community it was greatly discouraged and we both knew that wasn't what we wanted. What fun it was to be wooed and won by my husband, who has since been faithful, a great provider and a fabulous father to our 5 children. If people want permanent love and strong intact families, this is the best way to get there. Regnerus amply shows that cheap sex makes such happy endings very difficult and precarious. Unfortunately, all unmarried people are part of the market that demands cheap sex whether they want to be or not. Can this be changed? Change in this realm is very difficult because it requires understanding the problem, the cooperation of all women together, and basic social mores that force men to pay the price for love.Interestingly, this book is about the marriage market and the role sex plays in it, not so much about the spiritual and relational joys of marriage, but ultimately it is about these too, because cheap sex more often than not destroys the possibility of these higher and deeply satisfying goods. In its place, sex is an important glue that holds marriage together, produces children and gives the couple something wonderful they can share. Wrongly used, it kills romance, family and everything it touches.

What happens to a society when the price of something that everybody wants suddenly goes way down?What if that thing is sex?What happens if the cheaper sex alternatives compete with the desire and perceived need to get married?Mark Regnerus sets out to answer these questions in his book Cheap Sex. Professor Regnerus discusses the issue thoroughly with both survey evidence and interviews with young people caught up in this new sexual marketplace.Ultimately, the answer to these questions is that we really don't know what will happen. Regnerus remains optimistic that our society will go on and that we'll adapt to these new realities.I've read some critical reviews of this book. I'd like to mention two things vis-a-vis the critics: First Professor Regnerus announces his bias at the beginning of the book. Everybody is biased. It is nice to know where the author stands so we can shade our opinions of what he says accordingly. We can never be without bias.Second, Professor Regnerus offers a number of predictions of how the trends he addresses will play out in future. These predictions give the book a certain immunity from criticism: if you want to prove Regnerus wrong, you don't have to opine, to cite evidence or to come up with witty rejoinders. All you have to do is wait. And you'll see if he was right or wrong.I have a sneaking suspicion that somebody who thought as deeply on these issues is going to be more right than wrong.I'd also like to draw your attention to a sentence on page 62 of the book. "In truth, I was wrong about Tinder (though nobody knew it because I never publicly wrote about it)."He then goes on to explain the nature of his incorrect prediction. I hope you see what's happening here. Prof. Regnerus is admitting a mistake. But he's not just doing that. He's GRATUITOUSLY admitting a mistake. Nobody could possibly have caught him in that error, because his error was never published. Yet he wants the reader to know how his previous thinking was wrong, and how the facts have corrected that mistake. Everybody is wrong all the time. Only the best of us admit it. That admission (along with the many times the author tells you he's guessing because the facts we have at hand are incomplete) lends more credibility to this book than anything else. His intellectual humility is to be imitated.

I recently purchased this book and an about 25% into it - so I may update my review later.So why review the book this early? Because:1. Even at this early point I'm impressed with Regnerus's scholarship on this important issue, and2. The negative "reviews" (a) are *not* verified purchases (sure, I realize not everyone purchases their books at Amazon, but why post a review here otherwise?) (b) are rants rather than thoughtful criticisms. I'd hate to see this book (or any book) be ignored because of negative reviews that don't address the content of the book per se.

There is much talk about modern dating, marriage, and sex, but what is really happening is often unclear. This accessible, but well researched and documented work, shows that a profound transformation is occurring that will have huge implications. It turns out that the renowned sociologist Anthony Giddens' work "The Transformation of Intimacy" correctly identified the emergence of confluent love. Confluent love is not forever love, but love that asks whether this relationship is satisfying for both parties. When one party answers "no," the relationship does not continue. Through original research and interviews, along with analysis of other cutting edge research, Mark Regnerus makes a compelling argument that confluent love is the new norm that is shaping our dating and marriage relationships. For good or ill, neither the left not the right will be happy with the result, confluent love has changed expectations and patterns. This lively and engaging work can be read by the non-specialist and specialist alike.

I have taken college classes on some Adobe products and I learn more in these video tutorials than I ever learned in a semester of class. I have purchased directly from Video2Brain and then I found their products on Amazon. Great place to buy.As far as specifically learning InDesign... very easy to learn from these videos. I bought two college books and although they weren't bad, I'm just a visual person and found it much easier and quicker with the DVD. Yes you can actually see the buttons they are pushing and you can pause etc. I love that I can put bookmarks and go back to find a particular technique quite easily.Definitely worth the money and time.

This is the best introduction to InDesign that I have found. I've worked through several InDesign video training courses, but this one is the best for anyone who is new to InDesign. Kelly McCathran is a superb instructor, and I prefer her approach to teaching. I've also purchased her Photoshop CS6 DVD because of her teaching prowess. She explains every detail of the topic being covered, and doesn't assume the student already knows things. This is the most appealing aspect to me, when it comes to learning new material. The pace is just right, and Kelly provides insight on printing and design aspects that really added to my understanding of the subject.

I was more than pleased to pop this DVD in and see how thorough this woman is in teaching. Even if you have no publishing experience, you won't regret purchasing her teaching tool. She repeats throughout her lessons, just incase you missed something. Extremely pleased!!

I can't give this one 5 stars, mainly because some of the author's "predictions" seem a bit wild and far-fetched and not grounded in hard-core statistical formulas that add up. But his general theories about the way baby boomers will age and affect the economy is valid and this book provides plenty of food for thought. I think it makes sense that many baby boomers, as Dent suggests, will have to allocate more and more of their income for health care and may also wish to downsize and spend less money as they age - or they may have no other choice but to spend less. As a firm believer that spending goes in cycles and that people of various ages spend differently, this book held a lot of information that I found useful. But if you read it with the idea that EVERY prediction is set in stone and will come true, you're better off going to a fortune teller. Take it for what it is worth, a set of theories or general ideas and trust your own instincts. When seen in this light, the book is an intriguing and even eye-opening read.

I have been a technology investor for over a decade, and done very well because I acutally understand technology and investing. I am glad to find an economist (I'm coming from the scientific side of this equation) who actually understands "gets it" from the economic side. Read this book, understands its fundamental concepts, and put it to work! I feel you will profit greatly(I know I am - heading for early retirement with a very nice income). I am giving this book to several of my friends.

After reading Dent's superb book "The Great Boom Ahead" I was really looking forward to this book. However, aside from repeating himself, this book provides little new insight. Stick with his other book, and don't waste your time on this one.

Who could have blamed Harry Dent for his blissfully optimistic prediction of a roaring economy in general and stock market in particular in the first decade of the 2000s? After all, the markets had already increased several-fold in previous years, the NASDAQ in particular was going up and up and up, the economy was great, and his own technical analysis indicated a continued growth of unprecedented proportions. The problem was that Harry could not foresee 911, the pricking of the dot.com bubble, the collapse of Enron, or, toward the end of the first decade of the millennium, the collapse of the housing market. But while none of us is prescient concerning the future, all of us should realize that economic bubbles don't last forever. Whether we're dealing with tulip bulbs, baseball cards, or tech companies, growth always has its limit. And a rapid rise in value is almost always followed by a period of deflation. Dent certainly knew all this. But he ignored it. This time it would be different. And that's the way that people who invest when the bubble is about to burst always think. But it's never different. The bubble pops. And the optimistic predictions are never fulfilled. If you read this book, read it only as a period piece and a study in irrational exuberance.

Harry S. Dent is a very intelligent person and has a good understanding of why markets work as they do. When I first read this book in 2000 I was impressed with his analysis. And if one wants to read this book solely for its technical analysis, then it's still worth reading.However, markets are influenced by a number of factors--the political and geopolitical situation, investor confidence, and the like. These factors are much harder to predict. Because of this, predictions concerning future market trends are inherently risky. Dent should have known this when he wrote his book and kept his predictions modest.Certainly Dent couldn't have known in advance about the collapse of Enron, the 9/11 attacks, and other events that weighed down the stock market in the first couple years of the new decade. Nor could he have foreseen how misguided policies in both the public and private sectors would bring about the deep recession of 2008-2009. But he certainly should have sensed in 1999 (when this book was published) that the stock market, which had skyrocket for most of the decade, was already overvalued, and that the Nasdaq and dot.com bubbles couldn't last. Had he seen this, it is doubtful that he would have made the predictions that he did.Which leads me to another reason to read this book. It's a great example of the sort of irrational exuberance that one finds whenever things are going well. Along with "Dow 36,000" (the paradigm of the irrational optimism of the era), it shows how even intelligent analysts can get caught up in the excitement of the moment, and, leaving reason to one side, make predictions that in retrospect are truly laughable.

If you love Black Mirror and lament the lack of bonus features on the DVDs, then you must buy this book. It's a beautiful matte black, slightly rubberized finish, with pages of glossy high quality photos. But beyond aesthetics, it's also filled with all the thoughts and experiences of the creators (and sometimes the actors) about making every episode up to Season 4 Black Museum, which was a pleasant surprise (no Bandersnatch); in short, everything you'd hope for in a DVD commentary. I'm buying a second copy for a friend because it's so must-have.

Black Mirror is one of the most impressive shows on TV right now and this book is where to look if you want to know why Charlie Brooker wrote that episode about the Prime Minister and the pig, or how complex premises like that of 'White Bear' came together.

A really interesting book for fans like myself of the series. Has a few pages of interviews and photos devoted to each episode from the first four seasons. I would only remove one star because I would love to see more in depth. But still, a fascinating read.

This is a great coffee table reference for an amazing show. I can't wait for vol. 2 in a couple of years, with another few seasons worth of insight. Great stuff!

If you have ever watched the show this is quite the treat. I wish mine had arrived in mint condition since I wanted to display it, sadly it came like this. I couldnâ€™t drop the star rating less than 5 because itâ€™s so fantastic inside though.
